Linking to content

Content items, search results, and groups can be accessed directly by a URL. This means you can link to a details page, a map, or a group by copying and pasting the URL that appears in the address bar of your web browser, for example, http://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?owner=esri&title=Esri%20Maps%20and%20Data. Using direct URLs lets you promote public items through email, blogs, and social media.

Note:

Be sure your item is shared with everybody (public) before you send out a URL. For more information, see Sharing content.

Linking to item details

Steps:

1. Open the details page for the item you want to link to. To get to the details page, click the Details link underneath the item thumbnail.
2. Copy the URL that appears in the web browser address bar.
3. Paste the URL in an email or website.

   The link goes to the details for the item, not the item itself.

Tip:

The details page includes options to share the item to your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Linking to search results

To quickly get the URL of search results, follow these steps:

Steps:

1. Use search to display a list of results.
2. Copy the URL that appears in the web browser address bar.
3. Paste the URL in an email or website.

You can also manually create a URL of search results:

Steps:

1. Start with the website URL: http://www.arcgis.com. If you are a member of an organization, start with your organization's website, for example, http://acme.maps.arcgis.com. You can see your organization's URL from your profile page.
2. Add a reference to the path of the file: /home/search.html?.
3. Add your query and query type as q=<search string>&t=<content or group> (for example, q=streets&t=content).
4. Add &content=all if you want the search results to include ArcGIS files such as layer packages. For more information, see Finding content for ArcGIS desktop products.

In this example, your complete URL is http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=streets&t=content&content=all.

Linking to a group

Steps:

1. Open a group page.
2. Click the Share button and use the provided short link to share the group through e-mail, instant message, and so on. You can also use the provided buttons to post the group to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, embed the group, and make a gallery application. For more information, see Sharing groups.
3. Alternatively, you can manually create a URL to the group.
   1. Start with the website URL: http://www.arcgis.com. If you are a member of an organization, start with your organization's website, for example, http://acme.maps.arcgis.com. You can see your organization's URL from your profile page.
   2. Add a reference to the path of the file: /home/group.html?.
   3. Add the owner and group name: owner=<owner name>&title=<group name> (for example, owner=ArcGISTeamLocalGov&title=ArcGIS for Local Government).
   4. Add &content=all if the group contains ArcGIS files. This option will set the site to show all content, even if the site had been set to show web content only. For more information, see Finding content for ArcGIS desktop products.

In this example, your complete group page URL is http://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?owner=ArcGISTeamLocalGov&title=ArcGIS for Local Government&content=all.

Linking to a map

Steps:

1. Open a web map in the ArcGIS.com map viewer.
2. Click the Share button and use the provided short link to share the map through e-mail, instant message, and so on. You can also use the provided buttons to post your map to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, embed your map, and make an application. For more information, see Sharing web maps.
3. Alternatively, you can copy the URL that appears in the web browser address bar and paste it into an e-mail or website.
