Opening, closing, and deleting projects
Opening a project
Opening a project on a Windows device
To open a project using ArcGIS on a Windows device, start the application (see Running the application for the first time for more information). If you've previously enabled the Open last used project at startup option (See Application settings for details), your last used project will be opened immediately; otherwise, you will see one of the following:
- On the Open Project screen, all the available projects are listed. Tap a project to open it.
- If you download a project from ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, or Portal for ArcGIS, the application automatically opens the project after the download completes.
For some projects with secured data content, the application might require you to sign in when opening the projects, as shown in the following image. If you do not sign in, the projects still open with any data that your project administrator has cached for you. You can carry out data inspection, and sign in later when you need to perform synchronization.
If your project contains data from a hosted feature service, a dialog box appears and prompts you to download the latest data. Tap Yes to do so.
Opening a project on a Windows Mobile device
To open a project using ArcGIS on a Windows Mobile device, start the application (see Running the application for the first time for more information), then you'll see one of the following:
- On the Project List screen, all the available projects are listed. Tap a project to open it. These projects can be stored in main memory or on the device's storage card (if applicable).
If your project contains data from hosted feature services, or if your project consumes mobile services but data was not packaged by your project administrator (see Packaging data to know more), a dialog box appears and prompts you to download the latest data. Tap Yes to do so.
Closing projects

Deleting projects
When a project is open in the ArcGIS application, several files belonging to the project are locked. Therefore, before you can delete a project that's currently open, you need to close the project. After you close the project, the Open Project page (on a Windows device) or the Choose Project to Open page (on a Windows Mobile device) will appear. Complete the following steps to delete one or more projects:
- On the Open Project page (Windows device) or Choose Project to Open page (Windows Mobile device), tap Menu > Delete Projects.
The Delete Projects page appears (Windows Mobile device).
- Tap to select the project or projects you want to delete, then tap the Delete button at the bottom right.
- Tap the Delete option (Windows device) or the Yes option (Windows Mobile device) on the confirmation page.
The selected project or projects will be deleted.
- On a Windows device, you're then redirected to the Open Project page. On a Windows Mobile device, a Delete Project page appears that lists the deleted project. Tap OK on the page to return to the Choose Project to Open page.
