Application Builder

A key component of the ArcGIS Viewer for Silverlight is the Application Builder. It allows the easy and quick creation of Web mapping clients through an interactive, WYSIWYG user interface. You can configure map content, tools (including geoprocessing services), and the look and feel without writing any code or editing configuration files. As you configure your Viewer, the interactive Viewer preview updates in real-time, eliminating any guessing as to what your changes might look like. Once you are satisfied with your Viewer, click the Deploy button, or save to push it to a new website or update an existing one.

NoteNote:

Start the Application Builder by going to Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Viewer for Silverlight.

When you first start using the Application Builder, you'll notice that most of the functionality is organized in the toolbar. The toolbar is designed to help you quickly find the buttons and menus that you need to complete an operation. Items on the toolbar are organized in logical groups that are collected together under tabs. On the toolbar, the tools are organized in to the Map, Tools, and Layout tabs.

Map tab

The Map tab divides functionality in to two sections: tools for configuring layers and tools for adding content to the map. In the Configure section on the Map tab, you can specify a basemap for your application and show the Configure Layers panel to configure the layers in the map. In the Add Content section, you can use the tools to Browse for content from a known ArcGIS Server instance or ArcGIS Online, Search for content including places, ArcGIS Online and the Web, or add a GeoRSS feed.

Tools tab

The Tools tab is divided in to three sections: Toolbar, Controls, and Behaviors. In the Toolbar section, you can manage the toolbars in the application (add, remove, or rearrange tools), and add and configure both geoprocessing tools and custom tools. The Configure button allows you to configure settings for any configurable controls in the application, which includes the Map Contents panel and Editing configuration. The Behaviors section allows you to add or manage behaviors in the application.

Layout tab

The Layout tab is divided in to three sections: Branding, Layout, and Theme. These tools allow you to control the overall look and feel of your application. In the Branding section, you can add your own Logo to the application, change the title, and specify the links you would like, such as to help documentation or other websites. In the Layout section, you can change the look and feel of the application using one of several pre-defined templates. In the Theme section, you can configure the application's colors.
