Publishing a hosted feature service

To use a hosted feature service, publish your data to ArcGIS Online for organizations or Portal for ArcGIS, then enable the synchronization function for the service so that it can be consumed by the ArcGIS for Windows Mobile applications. Also, configure the editing and sharing options for the service before using it.

Publish a hosted feature service

As with a mobile service, before you can use a hosted feature service in a mobile project, publish your data. ArcGIS for Windows Mobile supports a feature service hosted in ArcGIS Online for organizations and Portal for ArcGIS. You can publish a feature service from ArcGIS for Desktop (if publishing an ArcMap document) or from the ArcGIS.com website (if publishing a shapefile or CSV file). Read Publishing a hosted feature service using an ArcMap document and Publishing a hosted feature service using a shapefile or CSV file for more details.

Enable disconnected editing with synchronization

After you have published a hosted feature service, enable its synchronization capability so the ArcGIS for Windows Mobile applications can use it. This capability allows your field workers to carry out disconnected data for collection and to synchronize with the feature service once the device is connected, the same way that a mobile service works.

NoteNote:

In Mobile Project Center, if you attempt to add a hosted feature service with its synchronization capability disabled, you receive a "Service doesn't support per layer sync." error.

To enable the capability, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. Sign in to the ArcGIS.com website and click My Content.
  2. Click the name of your feature service to view its item details.
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. Scroll to the end of the page, then check the Enable Sync check box.
  5. Click the Save button.

Configure editing option

You also need to ensure that the full editing option (Add, update, and delete features) is enabled if you want your field workers to be able to synchronize edits from the field. To ensure that the full editing option is on:

Steps:
  1. Sign in to the ArcGIS.com website and click My Content.
  2. Click the name of your feature service to view its item details.
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. Scroll down the page to locate the Editing option, make sure that "Enable editing and allow editors to" is checked and the "Add, update, and delete features" option is selected.
  5. Click Save button.

NoteNote:

If your field crew tries to synchronize field edits using the service owner's (the creator of the service) account or the organization's administrator account, they can synchronize regardless of the editing option. Therefore, to protect your services from accidental editing, restrict your field workers from using the service owner's or organization's administrator account for synchronization purposes.

NoteNote:

If the full editing option is off, field workers can still view data that has been packaged (read Packaging data for more details), but will receive an error when trying to synchronize data.

Share a hosted feature service

In addition to the editing option, you can choose to share a feature service with one or more group of users. After signing in to ArcGIS Online for organizations or Portal for ArcGIS through MPC, users who have access to a service can view and add it as operational data to a mobile project.

NoteNote:

Two types of services are not visible in MPC and cannot be added to a mobile project. Those services are:

  • Non-shared services created by users other than the one who signs in through MPC
  • Services shared to the entire organization and created by users other than the one who signs in through MPC

To learn how to share a hosted feature service, read Sharing items.

Finally, you can start using the service by adding it to MPC as an operational data for your mobile project. Read Adding operational map layers for more details.
