Downloading projects and operational map layers

Once your project administrator has created a mobile project, it can be shared to a mobile content server (installed within ArcGIS Server), ArcGIS Online, or Portal for ArcGIS for you to download from the field.

NoteNote:

ArcGIS Online is secured using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, which means ArcGIS Online can be identified by a digital certificate issued by a certificate authority. Before you download your first project from ArcGIS Online, see if the certificate has been installed into the Trusted Root Store of the device. If not, you must install it manually. For details, see Securing communication pipeline.

Whether you use a Windows Mobile device or a Windows device, downloading a mobile project involves two phases:

  1. Downloading the mobile project.
  2. Downloading operational map layers from mobile services included in the project. This step only occurs if your project administrator did not package data when authoring the project. For details, see About data packaging.
The workflow in phase 1 is slightly different between the two applications and so will be discussed separately below. The process of downloading mobile map data is the same for the two applications.

Phase 1—downloading projects

Downloading projects using the ArcGIS application running on a Windows Mobile device

Steps:
  1. On your Windows Mobile device, start the ArcGIS application. If this is your first time running the application, see Running the application for the first time.

The Choose Project To Open page appears.

  2. Before you download a project, you can verify the project source of where you are going to download by tapping Menu > Set Project Source. Verify that the correct project source is selected.
    • To change a project source, tap another source, then enter the uniform resource locator (URL) if the source is Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Server. Tap Next on the bottom right to log in.
    • To download a project from the selected source, tap Cancel on the bottom left to return to the Choose Project To Open page, then tap Menu > Download Project.
  3. To log in to the project source, enter your credentials and tap OK (for ArcGIS Server) or Next (for ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS).
    • If you set your project source as ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS, on the next page (the Groups page), select and tap a group to retrieve projects from. The Projects page appears, and you can tap a project to download it.
      NoteNote:

If you tap My Content on the Groups page, one extra page (the My Contents page) appears and shows a list of folders containing your content. Tap a folder to open the Projects page.

    • If you set your project source as ArcGIS Server, on the next page, you'll see a list of projects you can access.
  4. Tap the project to start downloading.

The Downloading Project page shows the progress.

    NoteNote:

The size of your project package and the speed of your network determine how much time it takes to complete the download process. Downloading a large project through a cellular network can be time consuming.

  5. When the application finishes downloading the project, you're prompted to download data if your project administrator did not package the operational data when authoring the project. Tap Yes and proceed to phase 2 to download data, or tap No to start your field work.

Downloading projects using the ArcGIS application running on a Windows device

Steps:
  1. On your Windows device, start the ArcGIS application. If this is your first time running the application, see Running the application for the first time.
  2. If the last used project is open, close it by tapping the upper left menu icon upper left Menu button, then tap Close Project.
  3. Before you download a project, you can verify the project source from where you are going to download. To do so, tap the upper left menu icon upper left Menu button, then tap View and Manage Settings > Project Download Source. Verify that the correct project source is selected, or to change the project source, tap another source and enter the URL if the source is Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Server.
  4. Tap OK. You are now ready to download a project.
  5. Determine project status:
    • If you do not have any existing projects in the device, the No Projects Available page appears. Tap the Download Project button as shown in the following image:
Download project page when no project is available
    • If projects are available, the Open Project page appears, and you can download a project by clicking the Download Project button at the bottom right.

The Download Project page (for ArcGIS Server) or the Sign In page (for ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS) appears

  6. Enter the credentials to connect to the project source, then tap OK.
    • If you set your project source as ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS, on the next page (the Download Project page), select and tap a group to retrieve projects from. The next page lists the projects that belong to that group; tap one to download it.
      NoteNote:

If you tap My Content on the Download Project page, one additional page shows, and you need to tap a folder to open it and choose the project you want.

    • If you set your project source as ArcGIS Server, on the next page (the Download Project page) you'll see a list of projects you can access.
  7. Tap a project to start downloading.

If you defined multiple project folders, the Choose Folder window appears. Tap one of the folders to start downloading the project.

  8. When the application has downloaded the project, you're prompted to download data if your project administrator did not package the operational data when authoring the project. Tap Yes and proceed to phase 2 to download data, or tap No to start your workflow immediately.

Phase 2—downloading operational map layers

When you open a project without packaged operational map data, you are prompted to download data.

Steps:
  1. The Choose Layers page (Windows Mobile device) or the Download Data page (Windows device) shows a list of layers you can download. Check the names of the layer or layers to download, then tap Next.
  2. If any of your map layers contains attachments, the Download Attachments page appears, and you can check the names of the layer or layers that have attachments you want to download; then tap Next.
  3. If the mobile map service or services from which you are downloading data is secured, you're prompted to enter credentials to connect to the mobile map service. Enter the credentials and tap OK to start downloading data.
    NoteNote:

The credentials you use to connect to a mobile service can differ from the ones you use to connect to your data source in step 6 in the Download Project phase. Depending on how your project administrator manages the data, operational map layers might be located on different secured ArcGIS Servers, so you need to log in to each secured ArcGIS Server separately.

    TipTip:

During data synchronization, you can tap the Tasks button (Windows Mobile device) or the Back button (Windows device) to start your field work simultaneously.

The following images show the two field applications when map layers and attachments have been successfully downloaded.

  4. Tap OK to exit the download process and return to the task list page.
