- ArcGIS for Server is only supported on Linux x86_64, on CPUs that adhere to the x86_64 architecture (64 bit), with supported Linux releases.
- It is a requirement that the OS (binary) has not been modified. Esri does not provide support if products are installed on Developer's Release of an Operating System.
- On Linux systems, the 'ext3' file system limits the number of item subfolders to less than 32,000; this means your portal is limited to having no more than 32,000 items. No new items can be added to Portal for ArcGIS when this limit is reached. It is recommended that you update or move the installation directory to an 'ext4' file system which does not have this limitation.

Supported virtualization environments
All components of Portal for ArcGIS are fully supported on virtual environments as long as they run on supported platforms. See supported platforms above. When running third-party applications with Portal for ArcGIS, such as relational databases, the application must also be supported in a virtual environment. Check the third-party vendor for its virtualization support.
If an issue is found to be specific to Esri software in a virtual environment, Esri Support Services will attempt to reproduce the issue on a stand-alone machine. If an issue cannot be reproduced with any of the supported platforms above on a stand-alone machine, Esri will not provide a fix or further support for issues that are specific to virtual environments except when the issues are in the following VM environments:
- VMWare vSphere 5
