Configuring the Search tool
The ArcGIS Viewer for Silverlight Search tool provides an easy way to add public content from ArcGIS Online and the Web to a map. Additionally it allows the end-user of your Viewer application to quickly look up place names, addresses, or other points of interest and include them in the map. When searching ArcGIS Online and the Web, ArcGIS Viewer for Silverlight searches for map, feature, and image services that are publicly available. When searching for Places, ArcGIS Viewer for Silverlight uses the ArcGIS Online World Geocode service which provides support for locating addresses, points of interest, place names, and other supported locations. When building a Viewer application, you can configure which types of searches the end-user may perform and the ArcGIS Server Locator service to use for the Places search.
Configure the Search tool
Follow the steps below to specify the ArcGIS Server Locator service for the Places search and to enable or disable search functionality for Places, the Web, or ArcGIS Online for the published Viewer application.
- If the Search tool is already included on a toolbar, click Manage on the Tools tab to display the Manage Toolbars dialog box. Otherwise, click Add Tool to display the Add Tool dialog box.
- For the Manage toolbar dialog box, click the Search tool under Current Toolbars and click Edit.
- For the Add Tool dialog box, click the Search tool and click Next.
- Specify the tool's properties including toolbar, label, tooltip, and icon and click Next.
- Specify the types of searches to include. By default, all three search types are included. Click the pencil icon to change the name or the description of each search type. Click Next when finished.
- If you want to use your own ArcGIS Server Locator service, specify the Service URL. If a proxy is needed, check the Proxy checkbox and enter the Proxy url in the Application Builder Settings menu. Click Connect and then click Next to continue.
- On the final page of the wizard, specify how you want to zoom to each result. You can zoom using an extent defined by fields in the data, or zoom by a defined width around the location. Click OK to finish.
