Populating the SCAMIN attribute (Maritime Charting)

The SCAMIN XML file may require configuration prior to use. The rules contained in the XML file determine the SCAMIN value that will be encoded on each S-57 object. If no rule is defined for a specific S-57 object, then no action takes place.

The SCAMIN tool provides a consistent experience while populating the SCAMIN attribute. To do so, the tool uses information held within the configurable XML files to populate SCAMIN.

The Radar Range method applies the SCAMIN values dynamically by taking the compilation scale of the S-57 product, or the M_CSCL feature within the product, and derives a feature's SCAMIN value based on a combination of rules and the two tables (Standard Radar Range and SCAMIN value) contained in the XML file.

SCAMIN is only populated on the ENC production database.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
  3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Nautical S-57.
  4. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.
    NoteNote:

The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    TipTip:

If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  5. Click the SCAMIN button SCAMIN on the Nautical S-57 toolbar.

A progress bar appears. When the process is complete, you are asked if you want to view the log file.

  6. Choose an option:
    • Yes—If you want to view the log file
    • No—If you don't want to view the log file

This log file contains records of which features were modified and reports any issues the SCAMIN tool encountered. Potential issues include when a feature is not split as it crosses the main S-57 cell into a MetaDataA (M_CSCL) feature or if a feature falls exactly on the MetaDataA boundary.

    NoteNote:

The location of the log files generated by the tool is different depending on your operating system:

    • On Windows XP, log files are written to <Installation location>\Documents and Settings\<User Login>\Application Data\ESRI\Production10.2.1\Nautical\LogFiles\SCAMIN.
    • On Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008, log files are written to <Installation location>\Users\<UserLogin>\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\Production10.2.1\NAUTICAL\LogFiles\SCAMIN.

If the location doesn't exist, the tool creates the space for it. The log file is saved in XML format.
