Enabling and removing pop-up windows

A web map can show descriptive information about features configured for display in a pop-up window. Enabling pop-up windows in a map service layer is a quick way to show pop-up windows in the map. However, layers can contain a large amount of feature data, and maps can include several layers, so the pop-up window tends to look better if you configure them with selected fields, formatting, media, and so on. For more information, see Configuring pop-up windows.

NoteNote:

Feature service layers always have a pop-up window enabled, so you do not see an option to enable pop-up windows. You do see an option to configure them.

To enable or remove pop-up windows on a layer, follow the steps below.

Steps:
  1. Verify that you are logged in if you want to save the changes to a map you own or save a copy of a map owned by somebody else.
  2. Open the map in which you want to configure pop-up windows in the ArcGIS.com map viewer.
  3. Click the Details button.
  4. Click the Contents button.
  5. Navigate to the sublayer that contains the feature data you want to configure.
  6. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name and click Enable Pop-up.
  7. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name and click Remove Pop-up if you do not want to display pop-up windows for a map service layer or feature layer you have previously enabled. There is no option to remove pop-up windows for map notes layers or KML layers.

Enabling pop-up windows on hosted tiled map services without feature data

You can display pop-up windows on hosted tiled map services that don't have any attribute data. To do this, you specify a feature service layer to use for displaying attribute data.

Steps:
  1. Verify that you are logged in if you want to save the changes to a map you own or save a copy of a map owned by somebody else.
  2. Open the map in which you want to configure pop-up windows in the ArcGIS.com map viewer.
  3. Click the Details button.
  4. Click the Contents button.
  5. Navigate to the sublayer of the hosted tiled map service where you want to display attribute data.
  6. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name and click Enable Pop-up.
  7. Specify how you want to choose a service by selecting Choose from my items or Enter a URL to a service.
  8. If you selected to choose from your items, check the box if you want to include items from your organization, select a map or feature service from the list, then select a layer in the service to use in pop-up windows.
  9. If you selected to enter a URL, enter a URL, for example, http://<Server>/ArcGIS/rest/services/<Service>/<LayerId>, then select a layer in the service to use in your pop-up windows.
  10. Click Enable Pop-up.
