Geocoding a table of addresses using ArcGIS Online geocode service
A table of addresses can be geocoded using the world geocode service from ArcGIS Online. The service requires an ArcGIS Online for organizations subscription. If you don't already have one, you can sign up for one or get a free 30-day trial subscription.
You may notice when you try to find an address in ArcMap or ArcCatalog, you are provided with a default locator called World Geocode Service. Although this is the same ArcGIS Online world geocode service that requires a subscription for geocoding a table of addresses, you can use this service without a subscription when geocoding addresses interactively (that is, one address at a time) using the Geocoding toolbar or Find dialog box.
Once you have an ArcGIS Online for organizations subscription, you can set up a service connection to the world geocode service.
- Start ArcCatalog or open the Catalog window in ArcMap.
- In the Catalog tree, expand the GIS Servers node and click Add ArcGIS Server.
- On the Add ArcGIS Server dialog box, click the Use GIS services option and click Next.
- On the General dialog box, type or copy and paste http://geocode.arcgis.com/arcgis/services into the Server URL text box.
- Add your ArcGIS Online for organizations user name and password to the Authentication section.
- Click Finish.
- Once connected, you see a service named World. You can browse for this service when you geocode a table of addresses.
