Geocoding a table of addresses in ArcMap
A table of addresses can be geocoded using the Geocode Addresses dialog box in ArcMap.
- Add the table of addresses you want to geocode to ArcMap.
- Open the Geocode Addresses dialog box using one of the following methods:
- Click the Geocode Addresses button on the Geocoding toolbar.
- Right-click the address table in the Table Of Contents and click Geocode Addresses.
- In the File menu, click Add Data > Geocoding > Geocode Addresses.
The Choose an Address Locator to use dialog box opens.
- If the address locator you want to use does not appear in the list, follow the substeps below.
- Click the Add button.
The Add Address Locator dialog box opens.
- Navigate to the locator you want to use to geocode the addresses and click Add.
The Add Address Locator dialog box closes.
- Click the Add button.
-
On the Choose an Address Locator to use dialog box, click the address locator you want to use to geocode the table of addresses and click OK.
The Choose an Address Locator to use dialog box closes, and the Geocode Addresses dialog box opens.
-
In the Address Input Fields section, click the drop-down arrow of each input address field and select the corresponding field from the input address table.
In the next step, you will choose whether the output feature class is static or dynamic. If it is static, a copy of the address table is created inside the output feature class. The output feature class will not be automatically updated if changes are made to the input address table. If the output feature class is dynamic, it is related to the input table. Modifying the address in the input table automatically triggers the feature in the output feature class to be regeocoded and updated.
- Select the option Create static snapshot of table inside new feature class or Create dynamic feature class related to table.License:
The Create dynamic feature class related to table option is only available if you have an ArcGIS for Desktop Standard or Advanced license and the input address table and output feature class are in the same geodatabase workspace.
-
Click the Browse button and navigate to the location where you want to save the output feature class.
By default, the output feature class is created using the spatial reference of the locator you selected for geocoding the table of addresses.
- If you want to specify a different spatial reference for the output feature class, click the Advanced Geometry Options button to specify the geometry settings.
-
Click the Geocoding Options button to open the Geocoding Options dialog box to review or modify the geocoding options that will be used to geocode the table of addresses.
When you geocode a table of addresses, modifying the geocoding options does not change the settings of the address locator you are using. Only the settings that are used to geocode this table are modified. These settings are stored with the output feature class, and the original address locator is not modified.
-
Click OK to start geocoding the table.
The Geocoding Addresses progress dialog box opens and displays the status and speed of matching. When the matching process is completed, the output feature class is added to the map. You can either click the Close button to close the dialog box or click the Rematch button to open the Interactive Rematch dialog box to review and rematch the addresses.
