An overview of Data and Maps for Server (2012)
Data and Maps for Server (2012) includes map cache services, down to about 1:1,000,000-scale, optimized to support ArcGIS 10.1 for Server projects. When published with ArcGIS 10.1 for Server, these basemaps and reference layers can be accessed with any ArcGIS application—such as ArcGIS Explorer, ArcMap, ArcGlobe, or ArcReader—or used to build custom applications using ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework or ArcGIS Web Applications for the Java Platform, or APIs, such as ArcGIS API for Flex, ArcGIS API for JavaScript, or ArcGIS API for Silverlight.

- Caches of prerendered map tiles generated in the ArcGIS Online/Bing Maps/Google Maps tiling scheme using the compact cache format
- A ArcGIS 10.1 for Server tiling scheme (conf.xml) file for each map cache
- Ready-to-use map document (.mxd) files that reference the map caches
- Service definition (.sd) files for use in creating the map services on ArcGIS 10.1 for Server. These files contain information about service properties, capabilities, and the service type, which is encapsulated into one portable file.
