Deploying the services

Data and Maps for Server (2012) contains map resources that you can publish on your ArcGIS 10.1 for Server system. These include caches of prerendered map tiles in compact format, as well as the ready-to-use map documents and service definitions that reference the caches. You need these resources to create optimized services.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites must be met before you deploy Data and Maps for Server (2012) to your GIS server:

NoteNote:

If you previously used services from Esri Data & Maps for Server 10, you must upgrade to ArcGIS 10.1 for Server to use the services included on Data and Maps for Server (2012). For more information, see What to expect when migrating to ArcGIS 10.1 for Server for Windows in ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Help under Services > ArcGIS for Server > Introducing ArcGIS for Server (Windows) > Migration to ArcGIS 10.1 for Server or What to expect when migrating to ArcGIS 10.1 for Server for Linux in ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Help under Services > ArcGIS for Server (Linux) > Introducing ArcGIS for Server > Migration to ArcGIS 10.1 for Server.

Publishing the map resources to ArcGIS 10.1 for Server

To publish services using the data from Data and Maps for Server (2012), you will first need to copy the map caches to ArcGIS 10.1 for Server. Once you've copied the necessary files, you can publish map services that reference them.

The subsequent sections walk you through the process of copying the files, configuring ArcGIS 10.1 for Server, and publishing the services:

Step 1: Choose a server cache directory

ArcGIS 10.1 for Server contains a list of server cache directories from which it can retrieve map tiles. Each service from Data and Maps for Server (2012) contains a cache of tiles that you will need to copy into a server cache directory on ArcGIS 10.1 for Server. Most users will use the default cache directory created during ArcGIS 10.1 for Server site creation (C:\arcgisserver\directories\arcgiscache for Windows or <ArcGIS for Server installation directory>/usr/directories/arcgiscache for Linux). You can use this cache directory or create a new one. Refer to Installing ArcGIS 10.1 for Server for Windows or Installing ArcGIS 10.1 for Server for Linux for more information.

Step 2: Copy the caches to your server cache directory

You can now begin copying the caches to the server cache directory. The caches are located in the cache folder of the DVD or in the folder where you reassembled the ISO downloads. You do not need to copy all the caches at this time; you only need to select the ones that you will be publishing on ArcGIS 10.1 for Server. Later, you will create services that reference these caches.

How to copy the caches

To copy a map cache from the DVD or folder where you reassembled the ISO downloads, copy the entire folder (for example, World_Imagery) directly into your server cache directory, for example, C:\arcgisserver\directories\arcgiscache for Windows or <ArcGIS for Server installation directory>/usr/directories/arcgiscache for Linux.

When you copy the caches, do not change the folder names or folder structure from the original structure on Data and Maps for Server (2012).

Step 3: Publish the services

The final and most important deployment step is to publish map services. These services will reference the caches that you copied from Data and Maps for Server (2012). You publish these services the same way you create any other ArcGIS 10.1 for Server service. Following are some basic instructions:

Publishing map services

Using ArcGIS Server Manager, you can publish a service definition file (.sd) as a service. The service definition is uploaded to the server as part of the publishing process. You don't have to copy it to the server beforehand.

To publish a service definition using Manager, follow these steps for each map service that you want to create:

Steps:
  1. Open ArcGIS Server Manager and log in.
  2. Click Services > Manage Services > Publish Service.
  3. Click the browse button to navigate to the source_documents > service_definitions folder on the Data and Maps for Server (2012) DVD or in the folder where you reassembled the ISO downloads.
  4. Select the service definition you want to publish, for example, World_Imagery.sd.

Choose File to Upload dialog box with World_Imagery.sd highlighted

  5. Click Next.

Select the service definition file dialog box with path to World_Imagery.sd file

  6. By default, the service definition is published to the server folder specified in the service definition configuration. You must publish the service definition to this root folder.

Specify properties dialog box for World_Imagery map service

  7. Optionally, choose the GIS server cluster that will host the published service definition. To learn more, see About GIS server clusters for Windows or About GIS server clusters for Linux.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Optionally, choose to enable or disable capabilities for your service definition.
  10. Click Publish to publish the service definition as a service.

The new map service will appear in the list of available services.

  11. Repeat this process for any other map services you want to configure.

For more information, see Publishing a service definition to the server in Manager for Windows in ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Help under Services > ArcGIS for Server (Windows) > Publishing services > How to publish services or Publishing a service definition to the server in Manager for Linux in ArcGIS 10.1 for Server Help under Services > ArcGIS for Server (Linux) > Publishing services > How to publish services.

Step 5: Use the services

See Using the services for suggestions on how to use the map cache services included with Data and Maps for Server (2012).
