Download, extract, and install ArcGIS 10.1 for Server

Windows

  1. Make sure you have write access to your download directory location as well as your ArcGIS installation directory location, and that no one is accessing it.
  2. Existing users previous to ArcGIS 10.1: Use the ArcGIS Uninstall Utility, available on the Esri Customer Care Portal, to locate and automatically remove previous ArcGIS 9.x or 10.x products that are installed on your machine.
  3. Click on the product's download link on Esri's Customer Care Portal. Recommended: Use the Esri Download Manager to manage your 10.1 downloads.
    CautionCaution:

When downloading with the Esri Download Manager, you can select and download multiple products. However, only one product should be started at a time when the downloads are complete.

  4. The first panel of the extraction wizard will allow you to indicate the location on your computer to which you would like the installation files extracted. When satisfied, click OK.
    NoteNote:

If you choose to change the destination location when starting the .exe (either from the Launch option in the Esri Download Manager or running the downloaded self-extracting .exe manually), be sure to choose a unique location to extract the files.

  5. You will be notified when the file extraction is complete. To automatically install the software, leave the Launch the setup program check box on the final panel of the extraction wizard checked. To install the software at a later time, uncheck the check box. You can install the software at any time by browsing to the product's extracted location and running the setup.exe.
    NoteNote:

Administrative privileges will be required for installing the ArcGIS software product. If you do not have the necessary privileges, an administrator on your system can install the software by running the setup.exe at the product's extracted location.

  6. For help with installing ArcGIS 10.1 for Server, please see the ArcGIS Server Installation Guide.

Linux

  1. Click on the product's download link on Esri's Customer Care Portal.
  2. Save the file to a disk location large enough to hold both the gzip file and the tar file.
    NoteNote:

If you are installing more than one ArcGIS 10.1 product, please place each gzip file in a separate directory before expanding and extracting the tar file; otherwise, the Documentation directory, support directory, Setup script, and install.htm files will be overwritten.

  3. Make sure you have read-write-execute (rwx) access to your intended ArcGIS installation location.
  4. gunzip the ArcGIS 10.1 file for your platform to get the tar file. At the prompt, type % gunzip <file_name>.tar.gz..
  5. Extract the product tar file to create the installation directory: % tar xvf <file_name>.tar.
  6. Change directory to the extracted tar file location, and run the provided ./Setup script to install ArcGIS 10.1 for Server.

Install ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 for Server

ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 for Server can be installed on a machine that does not already have ArcGIS 10.1 for Server. An install of ArcGIS 10.1 for Server is not a prerequisite for installation of this Service Pack. Refer to the ArcGIS Server Installation Guide for Windows or Linux for more information on installing Service Pack 1. For more information about what is included with ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 for Server, refer to the Issues Addressed with this Service Pack and the What's New in the Server Help.

Authorize ArcGIS 10.1 for Server

NoteNote:

  • The ArcGIS 10.1 software requires 10.1 authorization numbers, which can be obtained from the Authorization and Provisioning page on the Esri Customer Care Portal.
  • Recommended: Use an Internet connection to complete the authorization steps below.
  • If you do not have an Internet connection for the machine on which you intend to install the software, you can authorize the software via e-mail or Web site with the use of a second machine that has Internet access.

  1. To authorize your software:
    • Windows: Click Start > Programs > ArcGIS > Software Authorization.
    • Linux: Open the Software Authorization wizard for ArcGIS 10.1 for Server from the following product installation location:

      <install path>/arcgis/server/tools ./authorizeSoftware

  2. Select the default option I have installed my software and need to authorize it.
  3. Select Authorize with ESRI now using the Internet.
  4. Enter your personal information.
  5. Enter your core product authorization number (ECPxxxxxxxxx). See the Authorization and Provisioning page on the Esri Customer Care Portal to obtain this if you do not have this number available to you.
  6. Enter the authorization numbers for extensions, if applicable.
  7. Click Finish after the authorization process is complete.
  8. Click OK to close the Software Authorization wizard.

If you are not using an enterprise geodatabase or an ArcSDE application server, your software is ready to be used. For guidance on how to start using the ArcGIS Server software, access the ArcGIS Server Manager and click the Help link. Access the ArcGIS Server Manager at http://<ArcGIS Server name>:6080/arcgis/manager. This location provides detailed information about ArcGIS Server. If you will be using an enterprise geodatabase, see Create and authorize an enterprise geodatabase. If you will also be using an ArcSDE application server to connect to the enterprise geodatabase, see Set up an ArcSDE application server for further information on configuring this environment.

Create and Authorize an enterprise geodatabase

Use the Create Enterprise Geodatabase or Enable Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool or a Python script to create an enterprise geodatabase.

Each enterprise geodatabase must be authorized with an ArcGIS Server Enterprise Edition authorization file. You must specify a valid authorization file when the geodatabase is created. Use the keycodes file generated when you authorized ArcGIS for Server. The keycodes file is created in the \\Program Files\ESRI\License10.1\sysgen folder on Windows operating systems and the /arcgis/server/framework/runtiime/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ESRI/License10.1/sysgen directory on Linux operating systems.

Once you have authorized ArcGIS for Server and have a keycodes file, you can create an enterprise geodatabase or update the authorization of an existing geodatabase.
