Common SP1 questions

This section addresses common questions about the behavior of ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 for Server.

Do I need to uninstall ArcGIS 10.1 for Server before installing SP1?

No. If you already have ArcGIS 10.1 for Server, the setup will automatically upgrade ArcGIS 10.1 for Server to SP1 without any additional configuration. Additionally, you can install SP1 without having a previous version of ArcGIS for Server installed on your machine.

Do I need to back up anything before installing SP1?

No. All of your services, site information, and security settings are preserved when upgrading to SP1.

Do I need to stop my GIS services and the ArcGIS Server service before installing SP1?

If you have not already stopped ArcGIS Server the setup will do it for you at the appropriate point in the installation.

In a multiple-machine site, can some of my GIS servers run SP1 and others run 10.1 final?

No. In order for your site to function correctly, all GIS server machines need to be at the same service pack level. You can upgrade your GIS servers at the same time or sequentially. If you have ArcGIS Web Adaptors configured with your ArcGIS Server site, you will also need to update the Web Adaptors to SP1.

When upgrading, what password do I designate for the ArcGIS Server account?

When you launch the setup for SP1, a panel displays asking you for the user name and password of the ArcGIS Server account. This is the account that you defined when installing 10.1 final. If the account has changed since you installed 10.1 final, for example, by using the configure ArcGIS Server account utility, you'll need to enter the user name and password that you designated when modifying the account.

I can't log in to Manager after installing SP1. What do I do?

If you are experiencing issues logging in to Manager after installing SP1, you may need to clear your browser's cache in order to log in. This is typically due to left-over information from the previous version of Manager being cached in the browser. Before clearing your browser's cache, make sure you are attempting to log in with an account that has administrative privileges to your site.

I don't see new features in Manager after upgrading to SP1. What's going on?

If you notice that new features in Manager at SP1 are not displaying in your browser, such as the Service Gallery Settings Service Gallery Settings button, you'll need to clear your browser's cache. Once you clear the cache, you'll see new features appear in Manager.

Do the ArcGIS Web Adaptor and ArcGIS for Server product versions need to be in sync?

Yes. You cannot configure the ArcGIS 10.1 Web Adaptor to work with an ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 for Server site. You'll need to upgrade your Web Adaptor to SP1 at the same time you upgrade your GIS servers to SP1. See Installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) for the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS) or Installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) for the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (Java Platform) for full instructions.

New ArcGIS for Server SP1 installations

The SP1 setup has no dependency on the previous version of ArcGIS for Server. You can install the setup completely on its own. For full instructions, see Installing ArcGIS for Server.

Upgrading ArcGIS 10.1 for Server to SP1

It is not necessary for you to uninstall ArcGIS for Server before installing SP1. The installation process will automatically upgrade ArcGIS for Server from 10.1 to 10.1 SP1. You can upgrade ArcGIS for Server using the setup or upgrade ArcGIS for Server silently from the command line. For full instructions, see the topics below:
