Upgrading an earlier version of Portal for ArcGIS

Portal for ArcGIS is provided as a setup program and is executed through a utility named Setup.exe. Before upgrading, see About upgrading Portal for ArcGIS to learn more about the upgrade behavior.

You can upgrade a previous version of Portal for ArcGIS to 10.2.2 using the installation program or upgrade silently using Windows Installer command line parameters.

NoteNote:

When upgrading Portal for ArcGIS 10.2.1 to 10.2.2, the setting that enables or disables automatic account creation is not preserved; automatic account creation is disabled after upgrading. This is unintended behavior and will be addressed in a future software release. If you enabled automatic account creation at 10.2.1, you can resolve this issue by immediately re-enabling the setting after upgrading to 10.2.2. For full instructions, see Automatic registration of enterprise accounts.

Upgrading Portal for ArcGIS to 10.2.2

The upgrade process will restart Portal for ArcGIS. You should consider your site offline during the upgrade.

  1. Back up any customization you've configured for your portal, such as properties you've modified in config.js to display social media links in the portal website, remove the account sign-up page in the portal website, or disable web searches on your portal's content. If you've heavily customized the previous version of your portal, it is recommended that you install 10.2.2 on a separate machine and prototype your portal upgrade.

    NoteNote:

Your services, site information, and security settings are all preserved when upgrading and do not need to be backed up. General settings you've edited through the portal website, such as adding your organization's logo and name to the website, are preserved when upgrading.

When restoring your portal customizations in 10.2.2, it is recommended that you do not replace the files you modified in the previous version in 10.2.2. This may adversely affect your 10.2.2 deployment. You'll need to open each file at 10.2.2 and manually re-add your custom behavior from the previous version.

  2. Start the Portal for ArcGIS installation program, Setup.exe, and read the welcome screen and terms. Click Next when you are ready to proceed.

  3. During the installation, read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you do not agree with the terms.

  4. The Portal for ArcGIS setup program displays the features that will be installed.

  5. Click Install to begin the installation.

  6. Click Finish to close the wizard.

After the installation completes, the portal website will open in a browser window. At this time, clear your browser's cache (including cookies). Information left over in the cache from the previous version of the website may cause the website to display incorrectly and you may not be able to log in. It is recommended that you clear the cache (including cookies) on all browsers that will be viewing the upgraded portal website.

If your portal's content directory is on a shared network directory, you will need to perform some additional steps to upgrade and reuse your content from the previous version. See Reusing an existing content directory for full instructions.

If you've previously authorized Portal for ArcGIS, you will not be prompted to reauthorize the software after upgrading. Your authorization information will be reused. If you have not authorized your portal for use, the software authorization dialog box will display. See Authorizing Portal for ArcGIS for authorization instructions.
