Installing Portal for ArcGIS

The steps below will guide you through the Portal for ArcGIS installation process.

NoteNote:

Portal for ArcGIS should be installed on a dedicated server that does not have any other web, application, or database servers installed on it.

How to prepare to install Portal for ArcGIS

  1. Verify that your site meets the system requirements. For that information, see System requirements.
  2. Log in as a user with administrative privileges.
  3. Close all non-critical applications on your server.
  4. Browse to the downloaded folder containing the Portal for ArcGIS setup or insert the Portal for ArcGIS media into the appropriate drive to automatically launch the setup program.
NoteNote:

Portal for ArcGIS uses ports 80 and 443. If these ports are in use, the Portal for ArcGIS setup will notify you that ports 80 and/or 443 are in use and exit. If you receive this notification, exit the setup, stop the programs using ports 80 and/or 443, and launch the Portal for ArcGIS setup again. See Ports used by Portal for ArcGIS for more information.

You are now ready to proceed with the Portal for ArcGIS installation.

How to install Portal for ArcGIS

  1. After successfully downloading the Portal for ArcGIS installation files, the Portal for ArcGIS setup will automatically launch.
  2. If ports 80 and/or 443 are found to be in use, the following dialog will be displayed. The Portal for ArcGIS setup will not proceed until the program, likely Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), is stopped or configured to use different ports. If unsure, contact your web server administrator.Ports 80 or 443 are in use
  3. During the installation, read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you do not agree with the terms.
  4. Select the Portal for ArcGIS installation directory. Only one feature is available for installation: Portal for ArcGIS. You will have the option to configure the content and data directories in the subsequent dialogs. The Portal for ArcGIS installation directory is for Portal for ArcGIS software components.Select Features dialog
  5. Specify the Portal for ArcGIS data directory. Data consist of database tables, logs, and indexes which support the Portal for ArcGIS database. Portal for ArcGIS data can stored locally or on a network share. These data will remain on the machine after Portal for ArcGIS has been uninstalled, enabling subsequent Portal for ArcGIS installations to use existing data that have already been configured.

If the data and/or content directories are local, two account options are available: Use Local System account and Specify the account name and password. The Local System account option is selected by default. The Local System account is recommended if both data and content are stored in local directories. See the Portal for ArcGIS account for more information.
    NoteNote:

Don't see the Local System account option? This means the data and/or content directories are on another machine, as specified in the Specify Portal for ArcGIS directories dialogs. See Distributed installatons for more information.
