Specifying extent for data frame rules (Defense Mapping)

If you set a data frame to Allow Scale to vary or Allow Size to vary, you must specify an extent for that data frame. You can set extent to Same as source data frame or choose additional extent options in the Define Extent dialog box.

Clip to shape based on extent clips the active data frame to the extent defined in the source data frame or in the Define Extent dialog box. Features outside the clipped extent will not display.

When you apply data frame rules, the active data frame's extent will reset to the extent defined in those rules.
