Adding notes (Maritime Charting)
The Notes Editor tool allows you to add notes to selected features. This includes adding a note to multiple selected features within the same feature class. Features belong to different thematic layers, and the thematic layer determines which note table will store the note. The Notes Editor tool will add notes to the note tables in the edit workspace.
You must start editing to add notes.
- Start ArcMap.
- If necessary, set up the DNC production environment.

Click the Production Start Editing button on the Production Editing toolbar.
Remarque :
The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.
Astuce:If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button on the Manage Features window.
- Select features to which you want to add notes.
- Click the Notes Editor button on the Nautical DNC toolbar.
The Notes Editor dialog box appears.
Remarque :If no features are selected, the Notes Editor dialog box displays no data.
Attention :If the table of contents contains layers from more than one workspace, a message informs you that the Notes Editor dialog box displays notes from the source workspace of the topmost feature layer in the table of contents. If you have started editing, the Notes Editor dialog box uses the note tables from the edit workspace.
- Click a feature ID in the tree on the left side of the Notes Editor dialog box to view notes associated with that feature. Remarque :
If the feature has no notes, the Notes Editor dialog box displays No notes attached to this feature.
- To add a note to a selected feature, use one of the following options:
To add a note to a single feature
Right-click the feature ID in the tree view to which you want to add a note and click Add\Edit Note.
To add a note to multiple features
Right-click the feature class in the tree view to which you want to add a note and click Add\Edit Note.
When adding a note to single features, if there are already notes.rat captured for the layer that is selected, a check box list and a text box are added to the middle pane in the Notes Editor dialog box. The middle pane is disabled if you are adding a note to a layer that doesn't contain any notes.
When adding a note to multiple features, if there are already notes.rat captured for the feature class that is selected, a check box list and a text box become visible in the Notes Editor dialog box.
Remarque :When working with an entire feature class, if a note exists and it is not attached to each selected feature, that specific note will be shown as ‘Mixed State’ in the Notes Editor dialog box and will be unavailable. If a note exists and it is attached to each selected feature, the note’s check box is checked. If a note exists and it is not attached to any of the selected features, the note’s check box is unchecked.

Type the note text in the bottom text box and click Update.
Attention :
If your note requires unit conversion, you must manually convert the units before entering the note.
Astuce:Do not press ENTER. ENTER appends the lines and separates them with a semicolon.
The note moves to the top text box. The note's check box is checked, signifying that the text has been attached to the feature.
- Click Cancel to exit add/edit mode.
