Methods for dividing routes for straight line diagrams (Production Mapping)
At version 10.2.1, linear referencing functionality is deprecated. Tools associated with linear referencing in Production Mapping can still be found in the Customize dialog box, but the Production Linear Referencing toolbar is no longer available. At the next major release of Production Mapping, this functionality will not be available.
It is recommended that you use Esri Roads and Highways to maintain your linear referencing information.
- Divide Routes Evenly—This option allows you to choose the number of sections that each route will be divided into. This option produces a fixed number of diagrams for each route, regardless of the length of the routes. For example, you have two routes—one that is 10 measure units long and one that is 20 units long. You choose to divide the routes evenly into two sections. The first route will produce two straight line diagrams, one from measure 0 to 5 and one from 5 to 10. The second route will produce two straight line diagrams, from measure 0 to 10 and 10 to 20.
Divide Routes every X measure units—This option allows you to specify the length, in the measure units, where each route feature will be divided. This option produces a varying number of diagrams for each route; however, each diagram displays the same length of each route.
For example, you have two routes—one that is 10 measure units long and one that is 20 units long. You choose to divide the routes every 10 measure units. The first route will produce one straight line diagram from measure 0 to 10. The second route will produce two straight line diagrams, from measure 0 to 10 and 10 to 20.
When you choose to divide routes, you should consider the purpose of the straight line diagrams. When you divide a route, you may also need to divide the events that span the locations where the route is divided. Because the events may also be divided, when you choose to create a straight line diagram, the wizard also creates a copy of the events used in the straight line diagram. This means that if you edit the events in the straight line diagram when the routes are divided, you are not editing the events in the original geometry view. When editing a straight line diagram that does not contain divided routes, the same events are used for both the straight line diagram and geometric view, so one edit adjusts the event in both views.
