Deploying a basemap separately

When you deploy a mobile project to field devices, if your project contains an offline basemap layer, you must deploy the basemap separately from the mobile project when the basemap is one of the following:

If, however, a project contains basemaps that are tile packages or tiled datasets added by value, the basemaps will be deployed with the project. (See Adding offline basemaps for details about adding a basemap by reference and by value). Whether an offline basemap is added by value or by reference, you can redeploy it if the basemap is updated or if you change the content and redeploy its associated mobile project. You can redeploy a basemap by replacing the old one on the device with an updated one. The following procedures describe where to deploy basemaps on your field devices. If you deploy a basemap to an incorrect location, when the field crew opens the project, they'll see a warning message, but they can proceed with their field work on the operational map layers.

NoteNote:

Mobile projects with ArcGIS Server tiled map services or ArcGIS Online map services do not require separate basemap deployment, but they require a network connection when your field crew uses the project in the field. See Adding ArcGIS Server tiled map services and Adding ArcGIS Online map services for details.

Deploying a basemap to a Windows device

When you deploy your by-reference basemap to a Windows device, you can copy it to the default basemap folder as follows:

NoteNote:

These are also the mobile project folders.

You can add additional basemap folders to store your basemaps as described in the following steps.

Adding additional basemap folders

Steps:
  1. Open the ArcGIS application running on your Windows device.
  2. Click the menu iconmenu icon > View and Manage Settings > Application Settings.
  3. The Application Settings page appears, browse for the Additional Basemap Folders: section, click Add basemap folder and browse to the location of your additional basemap folder. You can add a basemap folder only from a local drive. To add a folder from a network drive, you must first map it to a local drive.

After you've added an additional basemap folder, you can deploy your basemap to it or to the default basemap folder (as shown on the Application Settings page). When the field application opens a project with an offline basemap, it searches the default and additional basemap folders you defined.

Deploying a basemap to a Windows Mobile device

In contrast to the ArcGIS application running on a Windows device, a Windows Mobile device does not allow user-defined additional basemap folders. Instead, you can store basemaps in one of the following two locations:
