Using project user identity

If your project administrator has set up project identity information for your project, you'll need to sign in by either selecting or creating an identity when the project is opened. This allows you to differentiate yourself from your team members. You can also refresh the list of identities in your project with the back-end database. While the two field applications provide different interfaces for you to manipulate the identity information, they share the same workflow.

NoteNote:

The identity information is stored in an invisible point layer. You cannot manipulate this layer with the field applications' built-in tasks.

How to download an identity list

If your mobile project does not have pre-cached map data, you can download the identity information with the map data when you open the project for the first time.

Steps:
  1. Launch the ArcGIS application on your Windows or Windows Mobile device.
  2. On the Open Project page, tap the project you want to work with. In Windows device, if there is only one project, it will be opened by the application automatically.
  3. If your mobile project references mobile services and your project administrator has pre-cached data for you, you can proceed to the next section How to sign in to a project. Otherwise, you'll be prompted to download data. Tap Yes to proceed to the Download Data page (on a Windows device) or Choose Layer page (on a Windows Mobile device) to choose the layers to download.
    NoteNote:

If you tap No, you'll be prompted to download identity information. Tap Yes to download only the identity information. If you tap No, the application shows an empty Identities page (on a Windows device) or Choose Identity page (on a Windows Mobile device). You can skip the rest of this section.

  4. Tap the Identity layer and with other map layers you need to download, then tap Next.
    NoteNote:

For the ArcGIS application running on a Windows device, you have the option to not download the Identity information at this stage. On a Windows Mobile device, you must download the Identity information.

  5. If any of the map layers you want to download has attachment support, you can download the attachments for these layers. Tap the layers' names and tap Next.
  6. When the data download completes, tap Back (on a Windows device) or OK (on a Windows Mobile device).

The identities you just downloaded are listed.

How to sign in to a project

After you download the list of identities, the Identities page (on a Windows device) or the Choose Identity page (on a Windows Mobile device) appears, and you can tap an identity to sign in. Even after you sign in and start using the project, you can still change identities (if needed).

If there's no existing identity for you to sign in, see the section How to add and edit an identity to create a new identity.

Once you sign in, the application will remember your identity and save it with the project for future use. Depending on the project settings defined by the project administrator, the application may ask you to sign in when the project is open if you've signed in before.

To change identities after a project has opened, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. If you're using a Windows device, go to the View Map page of your project. If you're using a Windows Mobile device, go to the Task List page.
  2. On the upper left corner of the screen, tap the display name of the identity you used to sign in.

The Identities page (on a Windows device) or Choose Identity page (on a Windows Mobile device) lists all the identities existing in your project.

  3. Tap an identity from the list to have the application use that identity. The new identity will be reflected in any logging or field autopopulation using your identity.

How to add and edit an identity

When your project administrator authored your mobile project, he determined whether you are allowed to create or edit identities through the field applications. If you are allowed, you can follow the steps below to do so.

Steps:
  1. For a project that's already open, follow steps 1-2 in the How to sign in to a project section to get to the page where all identities are listed. Alternatively, tap a project to open it in the application, if the project requires you to sign in everytime you open it, you will see the list of identities.
  2. Tap Menu > Add Identity.

    The Create Identity page appears.

  3. Tap User Id. The New Identitty (User ID) page appears, enter a unique text string. Tap OK when finished.
    NoteNote:

The user ID must be unique with respect to other identities in the project; otherwise, you cannot save the identity.

  4. TapDisplay Name. The New Identitty (Display Name) page appears enter a text string. Tap OK when finished.
  5. Tap Save to create the identity. Upon successful save of the identity, the application will automatically sign you in using this identity. For more information on how to upload this identity to the back-end database (if the identity layer is based on a service), see the following section.
    CautionCaution:

Once you've saved an identity, you cannot delete it or edit its user ID.

To edit an existing identity, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. For a project that's already open, follow steps 1-2 in the How to sign in to a project section to get to the page where all identities are listed. Alternatively, tap a project to open it in the application, if the project requires you to sign in everytime you open it, you will see the list of identities.
  2. Open the Edit Identity page
    • If you're using a Windows device, tap Menu > Edit. Select the identity you want to edit then tap Edit.
    • If you're using a Windows Mobile device, use the up and down keys or rocker to highlight the identity you want to edit, then tap Menu > Edit.
  3. Tap Display Name. On the next page, edit the value. Tap OK when finished.
    NoteNote:

    You cannot edit User Id.

  4. Tap Save to save the identity.
    CautionCaution:

Once you've saved an identity, you cannot delete it.

Refreshing the identity list

With a mobile project open in the application, you can refresh (synchronize) the identities with the source of your identity layer. This allows you to upload the identities you created locally and pull the latest identity information from the back-end database behind the mobile service.

NoteNote:

Projects using mobile caches as the source for an Identity layer do not support synchronizing the identity list.

To refresh the project identities, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. Follow steps 1-2 in the How to sign in to a project section to get to the page with the full list of identities.
  2. Tap Menu > Refresh.
    NoteNote:

If the Refresh button is disabled, it means that your identity layer cannot be refreshed.

Any identity you created in your project will be uploaded, and the identities in the back-end database will be pulled down to the identity list in your project.
