Opening, closing, and deleting projects
Opening projects
Opening a project on a Windows device
To open a project using ArcGIS on a Windows device, you first need to start the application (see Running the application for the first time for more information). If you've previously enabled the Open last used project at startup option (See Application settings for details), your last used project will be opened immediately. Otherwise, you will see one of the following:
- On the Open Project screen, all the available projects are listed. Tap a project to open it.
- If you download a project from ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS Online, or Portal for ArcGIS, the application will automatically open after the download completes.

The application opens one project at a time; if you need to open another project, you must close the current project, then open the desired project from the project list.
Opening a project on a Windows Mobile device
To open a project using ArcGIS on a Windows Mobile device, you first need to start the application (see Running the application for the first time for more information), then you'll see one of the following:
- On the Project List screen, all the available projects are listed. Tap a project to open it. These projects can be stored in main memory or on the device's storage card (if applicable).
- If you download a project from ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS Online, or Portal for ArcGIS, the application will automatically open the project after the project download is completed.

To switch from one project to another, close the current project, then tap another project from the project list page to open it.
Closing projects
Closing a project on a Windows device
To close a project using ArcGIS on a Windows
device, click
the menu icon, then click Close Project.
Closing a project on a Windows Mobile device
To close a project using ArcGIS on a Windows Mobile device, navigate to the Task List page, then tap Menu > Close Project.
Deleting projects
When a project is currently open in the application, there are numerous files belonging to the project being locked. Therefore, before you can delete a project that's currently open, you need to close the project. After you close the project, the Open Projects page (on a Windows device) or the Choose Project to Open page (on a Windows Mobile device) will appear. Complete the following steps to delete a project.
Deleting a project on a Windows device
- On the Open Projects page, tap Menu > Delete Projects.
The Delete Projects page appears.
- On the Delete Projects page, tap the project or projects you want to delete, confirm they're checked, then tap the Delete button.
- Tap the Delete option on the confirmation dialog box. The projects are deleted, and you're redirected to the Open Projects page.
Deleting a project on a Windows Mobile device
- Use the up/down rocker on your device to highlight the project you want to delete.
A project must be highlighted on the project list page before it can be deleted. Do not tap the project on the project list page; that will open the project instead of highlighting it.
Note:
On a Windows Mobile device, you can only delete one project at a time.
- Tap Menu > Delete Project to delete the highlighted project.
- Tap Yes to confirm. The project is deleted from your device and is removed from the Choose Project to Open page.
