Updating features on a Windows Mobile device

You can use the ArcGIS application on a Windows Mobile device to update geometry, attributes, and attachments of existing features. Similar to collecting new features, the editing feature workflow is streamlined, and organizes geometry and other attributes on the same editing page as shown in the following screen shots:

Note:

The Attachment option does not appear if your feature has no attachment support.

Updating geometry

Depending on the type of geometry you edit, you can choose one of the following geometry updating options:

• Re-collect Geometry—Abandons current geometry and re-collects it.
• Replace a Portion—Reshapes part of a geometry. Use this option when you only need to update part of your feature's shape.
• Delete a Portion—Clips and deletes part of a geometry.
• Extend from End—Extend from an end point of an existing line segment.
• Extend to End—Extend to an end point of an existing line segment.

Geometry type support for each option is shown in the following table:

Note:

Regardless of the option you choose, you can edit geometry using Global Positioning System (GPS)-related tools, map sketching, or by inputting a known location.

To start an editing session, select a feature from the identify results list, search results list, measure feature results list, work list, or mange edit list. For example, once you've identified a feature, tap it and select Edit Feature. When the Edit Feature page appears, tap Shape (for lines or polygons) or Location (for points), then complete the appropriate steps in the following sections.

Re-collect Geometry

Steps:

1. (Skip this step if you are updating a point feature.) Tap Re-Collect Geometry.

   The Map View page appears with the existing geometry highlighted in cyan.

2. To collect a geometry, tap the GPS location button , the GPS streaming button (for line and polygon features only), sketch on the map, or tap Menu > Enter Known Location to enter coordinates. See Collecting features using a Windows mobile device for more information.

   • For point features, the re-collected geometry is rendered as a red square.
   • For line features, the re-collected geometry is traced by a red line with green vertices.
   • For polygon features, the re-collected geometry is pink and has a red outline with green vertices.

   Tip:

   You can modify your edits any time while re-collecting a geometry (for example, clearing the last collected location or clearing all locations). To do so, tap Menu at the bottom right and select the appropriate action.

3. Repeat step 2 to collect more vertices of a polyline or polygon's geometry, or to change a point's geometry.
4. Tap Next at the bottom left on the page to accept the new geometry.

   The re-collected geometry is outlined in cyan and overlays the original geometry as shown in the following screen shots:

5. Tap the Attributes button at the bottom left on the page to edit other attribute, or to save or cancel the edits.

Replace a Portion (polylines and polygons)

Steps:

1. Tap Replace a Portion.

   The Map View page appears with the existing geometry of the feature highlighted in cyan.

2. Tap any location on the existing geometry to define a starting point.

   A green flag is added to indicate it as the starting point.

3. Tap Next at the bottom left on the page to accept the starting point.
4. To collect a geometry, tap the GPS location button , the GPS streaming button , sketch on the map, or tap Menu > Enter Known Location to enter coordinates.
5. Repeat step 4 to collect more vertices of a polyline or polygon's geometry.
   Tip:

   You can modify your edits any time while re-collecting a geometry (for example, clearing the last collected location or clearing all locations). To do so, tap Menu at the bottom right and selecting the appropriate action.

6. Tap Next.
7. Tap any location on the existing geometry to define an ending point.

   A red flag is added to indicate it as the ending point.

8. Tap Next to accept the ending point.
   • If you're working on a line feature, the modified line is highlighted in cyan and overlays the original line.
   • If you're working on a polygon feature, the feature's boundary becomes cyan and red. The red outline indicates the portion you want to replace. Use the Switch button to switch to the other portion of the polygon to be replaced if necessary, then tap Next to accept the new shape. The new geometry is rendered in cyan outline on top of the original.

   When you save and view the feature again, the new geometry appears.

Delete a Portion (polylines and polygons)

Steps:

1. Tap Delete a Portion.

   The Map View page appears with the existing geometry of the feature highlighted in cyan.

2. Tap any location on the geometry to define a starting point.
3. A green flag is added to indicate it as the starting point. Tap Next on the bottom left of the page to accept.
4. Tap any location on the geometry to define an ending point.
5. A red flag is added to indicate it as the ending point. Tap Next on the bottom left of the page to accept.
   • When you save a line feature, the starting and ending points are connected by a straight line and the original portion is deleted.
   • On a polygon feature, the feature's boundary becomes cyan and red. The red outline indicates the portion you want to remove. Use the Switch button to select the portion of the polygon to be removed if necessary, then tap Next to accept the new shape.

Extend from End and Extend to End (polylines)

The Extend from End and Extend to End functions work similarly. The only difference is Extend from End connects the starting point of the extended line to the original line, while Extend to End connects the ending point of the extended line to the original line feature. See the following steps:

Steps:

1. Tap Extend from End or Extend to End.

   The Map View page appears with the existing geometry of the feature highlighted in cyan.

2. Tap an end point of the polyline feature, then tap Next to accept.
3. To collect a geometry, tap the GPS location button or the GPS streaming button , sketch on the map, or tap Menu > Enter Known Location to enter coordinates.
4. Repeat step 3 to collect more vertices of the new line.
5. Tap Next.

   The end point of the original line is connected to the new line.

6. Tap the Attributes button at the bottom left on the page to edit other attributes, or to save or cancel the edits.

Update attributes and attachments

You can update attributes by selecting a feature from the identify results list, search results list, work list, or mange edit list. For example, once you've identified a feature, tap it and select Edit Feature. When the Edit Feature page appears, tap each field to edit its value (To know how to edit the attributes, read the Collecting attributes of the Collecting features using Windows Mobile device document).

To add or remove an attachment, scroll down to the bottom of the Edit Feature page and tap Attachment, then follow the Collecting attachments section of the Collecting features using a Windows mobile device document to edit attachments.
