Getting started with Portal for ArcGIS
To get started using Portal for ArcGIS, open a web browser to the URL of your portal website. The URL is in the form https://webadaptor.domain.com/arcgis/home/. For example, a portal website hosted on a server named mywebserver.mynetwork.com using a Web Adaptor named arcgis would have the URL https://mywebserver.mynetwork.com/arcgis/home/. Ask your portal administrator for the URL if you don't know it.

For the best performance, especially with web maps, it is recommended that you use the latest version of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer.
Signing in
Depending on how your administrator has configured your site, you may need to sign in to verify that you are authorized to access content on the portal website. To do this, click the Sign In link at the top of the portal website home page. The first time you sign in, you will create an account. The next time you sign in, you must provide the user name and password of your account.
You may not need to sign in if your administrator has configured the portal to use your Windows login.
Once you are signed in, or authenticated, you can manage your profile, add your maps and applications, and join groups.
Navigating the website
Your administrator may have customized the look and functionality of your portal website, but all websites have the following functionality available:
- A gallery of maps and applications that are available for you to use
- A map viewer that allows you to create maps and share them with other members of your organization
- A way to create and manage groups to control access to the maps, applications, and other geographic information you store in the portal
- A central location for you to add and share items with others in your organization
- A search function to help you locate geographic information, maps, and applications
See a Quick tour of the website for more information.
