Navigating Data Driven Pages

Data Driven Pages give you the ability to generate a set of output pages by taking a single layout and iterating over a set of map extents. The extents are defined by the features in a layer and are sometimes called tiles, sections, or areas of interest (AOI). The layer that defines the extents is referred to as an index layer. Any feature layer may serve as the index layer.

Using the Data Driven Pages toolbar, you can navigate through your pages or go directly to the page you are interested in. There are a number of ways to navigate Data Driven Pages.

Using the index layer attribute table

Since the features of the index layer determine your pages, you can use the index layer's attribute table to navigate your pages using the Go to Page command off the row context menu.

Configure the table window for easier navigation. For example, you may want to hide unnecessary fields or move the page name field to the far left of the table.

How to navigate to a specific page using the table window

  1. Click the Open Attribute Table Open Attribute Table button on the Data Driven Pages toolbar.

The table window opens displaying index layer records. Each record in the table represents an individual page.

  2. Right-click the grey cell (row button) in the Table window to the left of the record (page) you want to view.
  3. Click Go to Page from the row context menu.
    NoteNote:

If you are using the keyboard to move through the table records you can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+D to go to the page.

Using the arrows on the Data Driven Pages toolbar

You can use the arrows on the Data Driven Pages toolbar to move through your Data Driven Pages page by page. You have the option of going forward through the pages or backwards. You can also go to the first or last page of the series.

NoteNote:

Clicking the previous page Previous Page button takes you to the page previous to the one you are on. It is important to note that this button does not take you to the previous page viewed. It takes you to the page immediately preceding the page you are currently viewing based on the sort order of the pages specified on the Data Driven Pages Setup dialog box. Likewise, the next page Next Page button will take you to the next page in the series.

Using text box on the Data Driven Pages toolbar

Another way to navigate through Data Driven Pages is to go directly to the specific page you are interested in. Use the text box on the toolbar to do this. This text box displays either the page name or the page index of the current page being viewed.

Page name comes from the name field you specify on the Data Driven Pages Setup dialog box. Page index is determined by the Data Driven Pages sorting logic, as defined by the sort field on the Data Driven Pages Setup dialog box. The page index is not the same as the page number, though in many cases they may share the same number. The index always starts with 1 and ends with the number of pages created. This is not necessarily the same as the page number. Page numbers may start with a value greater than 1. You may want the first map (like the first Data Driven Page) of a multipage document to start on page 4, in which case you would specify that the starting page number for this Data Driven Page series start with 4. The index would still start with 1.

Click the drop-down menu to choose between Show Name to display the page's name or Show Page, which will show the page's index within the series, that is, 3 of 17.
