Configuring the map viewer

SubscriptionSubscription:

Configuring the map viewer requires an organizational account with an administrator role.

As an administrator of your organization, you can choose which basemaps and templates your organization uses to author maps. You also set the default basemap and include a Bing Maps key if your organization wants to use Bing Maps.

To configure the map viewer settings, follow the steps below.

Steps:
  1. Verify that you are logged in and that you are an administrator of your organization.
  2. Click the My Organization link in the top banner. Your organization page opens.
  3. Click the Edit Settings button.
  4. Click the Map link on the left side of the page.
  5. Configure any of the following map viewer settings:
    • For Basemap Gallery, choose a group with web maps you want used as basemaps for the ArcGIS.com map viewer. Basemaps need to be single-layer web maps created with the ArcGIS.com map viewer or ArcGIS Explorer Online. If you reference a multilayer basemap, only the bottom layer will appear.

To change how the basemaps are sorted in the gallery, select a field in the drop-down list next to Sorted by. To change how the basemaps are ordered, check or uncheck the box next to Ascending. If you change the sort field or order here, the items on the group page, as well as on embedded galleries or gallery apps, are also changed.

    • For Default Basemap, choose the basemap you want opened when users create a new map with the ArcGIS.com map viewer. You see the maps in the group you selected for the Basemap Gallery. The basemap opens to the most recently saved extent.
    • For Bing Maps, enter the Bing Maps key that Microsoft provided you.

This is an optional configuration if your organization wants to use Bing Maps in web maps. If you enable this option, members of your organization see Bing as an option for adding layers from the web. To create a key, visit the Bing Maps Account Center. If you have questions about using Bing Maps with ArcGIS Online, contact your account manager or local Esri office. For more information about the phasing out of complimentary use of Bing Maps in ArcGIS, see What's new for March 2013.

    • For Web App Templates, choose the group that contains templates that you want available for creating web mapping applications.

To change how the templates are sorted in the web app gallery, select a field in the drop-down list next to Sorted by. To change how the templates are ordered, check or uncheck the box next to Ascending. If you change the sort field or order here, the items on the group page, as well as on embedded galleries or gallery apps, are also changed.

      NoteNote:

Each template should include a downloadable ZIP file containing the source code of the application template and a preview version that can be displayed in a web browser. Add your preview version as a web mapping application item and attach your source code to the item. For more information on creating custom templates and adding them to ArcGIS Online, see Creating web application templates.

  6. Click Save to save the changes you've made.

TipTip:

Group owners can add public items to their groups. This means that as a group owner, you could include some basemaps and templates shared to ArcGIS Online by Esri in your Basemap Gallery and Web App Templates. For example, you could include the World Topographic Map as a basemap and some of the Map Stories templates. For more information, see Owning groups.
