What's new in Esri Defense Mapping (Defense Mapping)
With Esri Defense Mapping 10.1, several enhancements have been made to the user experience and the functionality.
New at Service Pack 1 Patch 6
The following changes were made in the Service Pack 1 Patch 6 release.
New geoprocessing tools
- Create Adjoining Sheet Guide Data— A tool in the Cartographic Data toolset that creates data used in the adjoining sheet guide of Defense Mapping templates. The tool uses an input area of interest (AOI) to find surrounding areas of interest. It creates data within those AOIs in the ASG_COAST_L and ASG_LAND_A feature classes.
- Create Elevation Guide Data—A tool in the Cartographic Data toolset that creates data required for an Elevation Guide Box in defense-specific map templates. This tool uses banding and thinning tools to create elevation bands, spot heights, and hydro features for the guide box.
- Create Rapid Graphic—A tool in the Cartographic Data toolset that produces a complete map document (.mxd) based on a specified map product. The tool uses an input area of interest, defense map product and data model version, elevation and feature data, and several tools to create the map document. The output map document contains defense-specific graphics. Multiple output map documents are created if the Input Area of Interest has more than one selected feature.
- Make Representations Invisible—A tool in the Cartographic Data toolset that sets feature representations invisible in an input feature layer or selected set of features. Setting a representation to invisible does not alter its feature geometry. Use this functionality to improve a map product's aesthetic or cartographic quality by hiding overlapping features and removing visual clutter.
- Create Low And High Spots—A tool in the Hypsography toolset that finds the high and low spot heights for each feature in an input area of interest. Spot heights are appended to a Defense Mapping feature class.
- Create Spot Heights—A tool in the Hypsography toolset that creates elevation point features based on contour tops and depressions. Elevation points are created in each top and depression. Point height values are populated based on a digital elevation model.
- Suppress Spot Heights—A tool in the Hypsography toolset that suppresses the symbol for spot heights based on the input product type. The tool uses the Make Representations Invisible tool to suppress the spot height symbols.
Geoprocessing updates
- The Create Contours and Code Contours tools were moved to the new Hypsography toolset.
Deprecated tools
The following Stereo Airfield tools were removed.
- Validate SAC Shapefiles
- Export SAC Data
New at Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 1 Patch 3
Layout elements
Coordinate display options were added to the properties of the ICM and TLM North Arrow elements.
Geoprocessing
The Reference Scale parameter was added to the Make Defense Grids and Graticules geoprocessing tool.
The following geoprocessing tools also were added.
- Import Topology imports a topology stored in an XML file into a specified workspace.
- Export Topology exports the topology in a workspace to an XML file.
- Geodatabase Compare compares feature classes and tables between two geodatabases.
- Batch Make Defense Grids and Graticules creates a grids and graticules layer from multiple selected AOI features.

Defense Mapping properties
- The Defense Mapping Properties dialog box was renamed to Property Configuration
- You can now save the property settings into a configuration file and use it for other maps by setting it in the Defense Mapping toolbar in ArcMap.
- The MGCP tab on the Defense Mapping Properties dialog box was moved to the Defense Mapping MGCP Tools toolbar and is now called Extraction Guide Location.

New tools
- The Geometry To Template tool on the Defense Mapping toolbar in ArcMap allows you to select a feature template when pasting features.
- The Create Generalized Bands geoprocessing tool has been removed from Production Mapping to be included in the Defense Mapping extension.
- The Split View tool on the Defense Mapping toolbar in ArcMap opens the Split View window and allows you to have two views of the Table Of Contents window and the data frame.
- Defense Grids and Graticules is a new geoprocessing tool that simplifies the Defense Mapping grid creation workflow by combining the functionality of Make Grids and Graticules Layer, Feature Outline Masks and Create Feature Dataset into a single tool
- GAIT is a new geoprocessing tool in the Features toolset that allows you to validate data against a data model based on specific conditions.
- Populate Map Sheet Info is a new geoprocessing tool in the Cartographic Data toolset that populates text in defense-specific graphic elements on an ArcMap layout.
- EGB Hydro Centerline is a new geoprocessing tool in the Features toolset that allows you to simplify hydro polygon features into individual polyline centerlines.
Geoprocessing enhancements
The following are enhancements that have been made to Defense Mapping.
- The MGCP Geodatabase To Shape geoprocessing tool parameters were generalized, and the tool was renamed to Geodatabase To Shape and moved to the Features toolset.
- The TFDM Metadata Ingest toolset contains geoprocessing tools that allow you to transfer metadata between different Defense Mapping data models.
- There is a new Banding toolset within the Cartographic Data toolset that contains all the banding tools. This includes the two scripts that create bands for JOG and TLM elements and the Create Smooth TLM Elevation Guide Bands From Raster model.
- The Create Smooth TLM Elevation Guide Bands From Raster model has been added to the Banding toolset. This model creates smooth band features for a TLM Elevation Guide element.
- The Create JOG Elevation Tint Bands tool has been renamed Create JOG Elevation Tint Bands From Features.
- The Create TLM Elevation Guide Bands tool has been renamed Create TLM Elevation Guide Bands From Features.
Other enhancements
The following are enhancements that have been made to Defense Mapping.
- The Topographic Data Stores (TDS) product is now supported.
- A series of Workflow Manager custom steps and Task Assistant Manager workflows are available to streamline and automate TDS production workflows.
- You can now define the number of bands that appear on a TLM Elevation Guide Bar.
- The TFDM product folder has been renamed TDS.
