Disabling the disk cache at the layer level

Disk caching can be disabled at either the application or layer level.

If you configure a layer to not use a disk cache for specific layers in the document, the existing disk cache for that layer is automatically deleted. This ensures subsequent sessions will pull new display tiles (for data or services that change a lot) and helps minimize the disk space being used on your machine.

Steps:

1. In the table of contents, right-click the layer you want to disable the cache for and click Properties.

   You can also double-click the layer in the table of contents to open the Layer Properties dialog box.

2. Click the Cache tab.
3. Check Do not use a disk cache under Cache usage and removal options.

   If you have a fully cached map or globe service layer, make note of the following additional considerations:

   For fully cached layers	If you check the option Do not use a disk cache, a warning appears before the cache is deleted. You must click the warning window to confirm and proceed with the action.
   For globe service and map service layers	The option Do not use a disk cache can be set by the publisher of the service to ensure that the client cannot locally cache the layer. This is common for secure or time-sensitive data. In these cases, you are not able to alter the setting; by default, the property appears checked on but unavailable.

4. Click OK to close the Layer Properties dialog box.

Tip:

By leaving the Do not use a disk cache option unchecked, a new cache is generated for the layer. This also applies to server layers, if allowed, by the publisher of the service.
