Zooming to a layer's extent

A useful way of examining a study area is to zoom to a layer's extent in the display. This method is a quick and easy way of zooming in to the area of concern, particularly if you have many study areas in the 3D view.

Steps:
  1. Right-click the layer to which you want to zoom in the table of contents to open the layer's context menu.
  2. Click Zoom To Layer.

The display zooms to the extent of the layer.

  3. To animate camera movements when zooming betwen known globe locations click Customize > ArcGlobe Options. From the ArcGlobe Options dialog box click the General tab and check Animate viewer when using tools and commands.
  4. Setting this option will animate the camera in a smooth fashion along the way to your destination.
TipTip:
  • You can hold down the ALT key and click a layer in the table of contents as a shortcut to the Zoom To Layer function.
  • You can zoom to the extent of multiple layers by selecting them in the table of contents while holding down the SHIFT key, then right-clicking to zoom to their combined extent.
