ArcGIS release versions and the parcel fabric
This topic applies to ArcGIS for Desktop Standard and ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced only.
Parcel fabrics can be upgraded to the latest released version of ArcGIS once the geodatabase has been upgraded. It is recommended that you upgrade your parcel fabric for each new release of ArcGIS.
Cadastral fabrics (9.3 fabrics) created prior to ArcGIS 10 using the Survey Analyst extension need to be upgraded to work with the new parcel fabric functionality in ArcGIS 10 and beyond.
Upgrading a parcel fabric
The following functionality is available on parcel fabrics that have been upgraded to ArcGIS 10.1:
- During joining, lines are bent to out-of-tolerance line points so that parcels with mismatched boundaries can be joined with no slivers or overlaps.
A system-managed FlexPoint attribute is added to the LinePoints table for the management of bent/flexed lines.

Line cartography tolerances are available for editing under the Edit Environment tab of the Parcel Fabric Properties dialog box.
- The PlanID field on the Parcels attribute table is editable in an edit session. Editing the PlanID field allows you to assign and reassign plans to parcels.
To upgrade a parcel fabric you must first upgrade the geodatabase in which the fabric resides. To upgrade the geodatabase, right-click the geodatabase in the Catalog tree and click Properties. Click Upgrade Geodatabase on the General tab on the Database Properties dialog box.
To upgrade the parcel fabric, right-click the fabric in the Catalog tree and click Properties. Click Upgrade Parcel Fabric on the General tab on the Parcel Fabric Properties dialog box.
Copying and pasting parcel fabrics between different ArcGIS release versions
- A 9.3 parcel fabric can be copied to an ArcGIS 10 geodatabase but will need to be upgraded to an ArcGIS 10 parcel fabric to use ArcGIS 10 functionality.
- An ArcGIS 10 fabric cannot be copied to an ArcGIS 9.3 geodatabase.
- An ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric cannot be copied to an ArcGIS 9.3 geodatabase.
- An ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric can be copied to an ArcGIS 10 geodatabase.
- An ArcGIS 10 fabric can be copied to an ArcGIS 10.1 geodatabase but will need to be upgraded to an ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric to use the new join functionality and edit the PlanID field on the Parcels table.
To copy and paste a parcel fabric, use the Copy Parcel Fabric geoprocessing tool located under Parcel Fabric Tools > Parcel Features.
Importing XML workspaces containing parcel fabrics to different ArcGIS release versions
Using ArcGIS 10.1:
- If an XML workspace containing an ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric is imported to an ArcGIS 10 geodatabase, an ArcGIS 10.1 fabric is created.
Using ArcGIS 10:
- If an XML workspace containing an ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric is imported to an ArcGIS 10 geodatabase, an ArcGIS 10 parcel fabric is created.
- An XML workspace containing an ArcGIS 10 parcel fabric cannot be imported to an ArcGIS 9.3 geodatabase.
- An XML workspace containing an ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric cannot be imported to an ArcGIS 9.3 geodatabase.
- If an XML workspace containing an ArcGIS 9.3 parcel fabric is imported to an ArcGIS 9.3 geodatabase, an ArcGIS 9.3 parcel fabric is created.
Editing parcel fabrics across different ArcGIS release versions
Using ArcGIS 10.1
- An ArcGIS 10 parcel fabric can be edited in ArcGIS 10.1 but will need to be upgraded to an ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric to use the new join functionality and edit the PlanID field on the Parcels table.
- An ArcGIS 9.3 parcel fabric can be edited in ArcGIS 10.1 but will need to be upgraded to an ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric to use the new join functionality and edit the PlanID field on the Parcels table.
Using ArcGIS 10
An ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric cannot be edited in ArcGIS 10.
Using ArcGIS 9.3 or 9.3.1
An ArcGIS 10.1 parcel fabric cannot be edited in ArcGIS 9.3 or 9.3.1.
