Smoothing track lines

Prerequisite:

Before you begin this procedure, you should have already symbolized track lines for a tracking layer.

Learn how to symbolize track lines.

After you create track lines for a layer, the lines can be smoothed to create a more fluid and visually appealing display. In some cases, smooth track lines may also provide a more accurate estimation of the path followed by vehicles.

Steps:
  1. Double-click a tracking layer in the Table of Contents window to open the Layer Properties dialog box. Click the Symbology tab.

This procedure assumes that you are selecting a tracking layer for which track lines are already displayed on the map.

  2. Click Advanced Track Options on the Show panel, and make sure that the check box next to Advanced Track Options is checked.

Make sure that the Tracks check box above the Advanced Track Options check box is also checked.

  3. Check the Smooth Tracks check box on the Smooth Tracks panel in the middle of the Symbology tab.
  4. Click OK to close the Layer Properties dialog box and apply the changes.
  5. Instead of being displayed as straight lines connecting events, your track lines are now displayed as smooth, curved lines connecting events.

TipTip:

Smooth track lines look nice, but you should not assume that they are appropriate for all data. If you determine that smooth track lines are not appropriate for your data, you can turn off the smooth tracks option by unchecking the Smooth Tracks check box on the Symbology tab.
