Finding a service area using geoprocessing tools

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap by clicking Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcMap 10.1.
  2. On the menu bar, click Geoprocessing > Search For Tools.

    The dockable Search window opens with the Tools category selected.

  3. In the search text box, type Make Service Area Layer and press ENTER.
    NoteNote:

    Depending on your needs, you might want to use the Generate Service Areas tool instead of the Make Service Area Layer tool and the tools listed in the rest of these steps. In general, Generate Service Areas encapsulates the other tools listed below and provides output formats that simplify the process of creating a web service.

    The results of the search are listed in the Search window.

  4. Click Search Tools.

    The Search window lists tools that are related to the search string you entered.

  5. Click the Make Service Area Layer link.

    The Make Service Area Layer dialog box opens.

  6. Specify the parameters on the tool's dialog box.
  7. Click OK.

    A service area analysis layer is created.

  8. Use the Add Locations geoprocessing tool to create objects in the different network analysis classes that serve as input to the solver.
  9. Type Solve in the search text box and press ENTER.

    The results of the search are listed in the Search window.

  10. Click the Solve link in the search results.

    The Solve dialog box opens.

  11. Specify the parameters on the tool's dialog box.

    The Input network analysis layer parameter should be set to the service area layer you created with the Make Service Area Layer tool.

  12. Click OK.

    The service area analysis layer is solved, given that no errors were encountered.
