Rebuilding address locators using a geoprocessing tool

When you make edits to your geocoding reference data, either by adding or deleting features or rows or by editing the address attributes they contain, you must rebuild your address locator if you want to geocode addresses against the current version of the reference data. The Rebuild Address Locator geoprocessing tool allows you to select a locator and rebuild it.

LegacyLegacy:

Rebuilding an address locator is not supported with locators that were created with ArcGIS prior to version 9.2.

Steps:
  1. Browse to the Geocoding Tools toolbox in ArcCatalog or the Catalog window in ArcMap and double-click the Rebuild Address Locator tool.

The Rebuild Address Locator dialog box appears.

  2. Click the Browse button Browse that is next to the Input Address Locator text box.

The Input Address Locator dialog box opens.

  3. Navigate to the locator you want to rebuild and click Add.
  4. Click OK.

    This initiates the rebuilding process.

  5. NoteNote:

Composite address locators cannot be rebuilt using this tool. The best practice for managing composite locators is to create a composite locator using the Create Composite Address Locator tool in a geoprocessing model. In ModelBuilder, you can also chain the tool with the Create Address Locator tool to use its outputs as the inputs to the composite locator and manage the entire process of creating or updating a composite address locator.
