ArcSDE application server installation guide

This installation guide includes instructions for installation and setup of the ArcSDE application server for DB2 and administration command line tools.

The ArcSDE application server provides a service that can be used to connect to an enterprise geodatabase. The administration command line tools included with this installation can be used to administer the ArcSDE application server, the geodatabase, and the data.

You can install both the application server and command line tools (the default), just the application server, or just the command line tools. Installations are specific to the DBMS and operating system you are using. Be sure to download and run the installation appropriate to your system.

NoteNote:

Both the ArcSDE application server and administration command line tools have been deprecated. See the Deprecation Plan for ArcGIS 10.1 and ArcGIS 10.2, which can be opened from Esri technical article 41175.

Before you install

You must install a database and create a geodatabase in it before you set up an ArcSDE service. Use the Create Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool, the Enable Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool, or a Python script to create a geodatabase before installing the application server and setting up a service.

Read the topics in the section "Setting up a geodatabase in DB2" in the ArcGIS documentation for instructions on creating a geodatabase.

NoteNote:

An enterprise geodatabase must exist before you can start an ArcSDE service. If you have not already created a geodatabase, do so now.

Also be sure the computer where you install the ArcSDE features meets the minimum system requirements. These can be found on the ArcGIS Resource Center.

What is installed?

When you install the application server, all files needed to set up an ArcSDE service are installed to the local system. This includes the command line tools necessary to create (Windows operating systems only) and start a service: sdeservice and sdemon, respectively.

When you install the command line tools feature, you get all the ArcSDE administration command line tools.

All files are installed in the SDEHOME directory, located inside the directory where you choose to install the application server and/or the administration commands. On Windows servers, the directory name is db2exe. On Linux servers, the directory is named sdeexe<arcgis_release#>.

On Windows, the documentation for the command line tools is installed in a documentation folder one level above db2exe. On Linux or UNIX servers, move the documentation from the installation files to a directory of your choosing on your local drive.
