If you have an earlier version of ArcView GIS (3.x)

You are not required to uninstall ArcView GIS 3.x to install and run ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1. ArcGIS for Desktop defaults to a different folder and will not conflict with ArcView GIS 3.x in any way.
