Adding ArcGIS Online map services

If you can ensure connectivity when your workers are in the field, you can use ArcGIS Online map services as a source for your basemap content. You can add these services, hosted by Esri, as basemap layers in your mobile project. All basemaps you can add to a mobile project from ArcGIS Online are free.

Adding ArcGIS Online basemaps using Mobile Project Center

Steps:
  1. Create or open a project in Mobile Project Center (See Creating a mobile project for more information).
  2. Click the Add button Add and click Basemap from ArcGIS Online.
The Add Map Layers window appears and displays a list of ArcGIS Online map services.
  3. Scroll down the list to find the map service you want to add. You can also click the Expand button Expand next to Canvas, Demographics, Reference, or Speciality to browse the lists of speciality map services.
  4. TipTip:

If the Expand button does not show, click the Refresh services button Refresh services to refresh the tiled map services.

  5. Double-click the name of the map service you want to add to the project.
  6. To add additional ArcGIS Online basemaps, repeat step 3-4. When finished, close the Add Map Layers window.

The map service(s) you added display(s) on map preview.

Using basemaps from an ArcGIS Online map service in field applications

When a mobile project with an ArcGIS Online map service is in use by the field applications, the applications temporarily create a small cache for the area in view at the current scale level. Caching during the use of a project improves the speed of map rendering, and if connectivity is lost, field workers can still view the cached basemap. When the project is closed, the cache is deleted from the device.
