Archiving Real-Time Data with Feature Logger

You can use the Feature Logger data link to archive real-time data messages as features in file geodatabases, personal geodatabases, and ArcSDE geodatabases.

As data messages come into Feature Logger from Tracking Server, Feature Logger will determine whether the messages have been enabled for logging. You must first choose a geodatabase where the feature class or table will be created for storing the incoming real-time data messages. This procedure covers the steps required to enable feature logging for a message definition.

CautionCaution:

Some database types require client database software to be installed on the Tracking Server machine in order to connect to a database. Ensure that all necessary client software is installed before connecting to a database.

TipTip:

If you are logging features to a personal geodatabase, it must be on the same machine as Tracking Server. ArcSDE geodatabases are not required to be on the same machine.

Steps:
  1. From the Start menu, start Tracking Server Manager.
  2. Click the Data Links tab.
  3. Double-click the Feature Logger data link to open the Feature Logger Properties dialog box.
  4. If the Feature Logger data link is not running, you will receive a message asking to start the data link. Click Yes to start the data link and open the Feature Logger Properties dialog box appears.
  5. Click the name of the message definition whose messages you want to log to a personal geodatabase or ArcSDE geodatabase. The message definition becomes selected.

To turn off logging for any dataset after it has been turned on, check the check box beside the message definition on the list to remove its check mark. Check the check box again to enable logging.

  6. With the correct message definition selected, click the Set Destination button. The Feature Logger Set Destination dialog box appears.
  7. Click the Browse button and navigate to the geodatabase you want to use as the recipient geodatabase, and click Add.

The data source information appears at the top of the Feature Logger Set Destination dialog box. You can change the table name if desired.

  8. If you are creating a feature class or table in ArcSDE, you may want to enter a configuration parameter string that will be used when creating the table.
  9. In the Spatial Reference Domain Parameters area, you will see the domain of the spatial reference that is designated for this message definition. Only features with coordinates within the spatial reference domain will be logged by Feature Logger. You may want to modify the domain parameters if you only want data within a specific area to be logged by Feature Logger.
  10. Click OK to save your configuration information.

If a feature class already exists in the selected geodatabase with the name specified in the Table Name text box, you will be prompted to either log features to the existing feature class or enter a different name.

  11. Click the Defaults button if you need to reset all the information back to its original state on the Feature Logger Set Destination dialog box.
  12. On the Feature Logger Properties dialog box, check the box beside the Message Definition that you want logged. Feature Logger will log messages matching this message definition to the geodatabase you selected.
  13. Click Close.

As long as the Feature Logger data link is enabled, incoming data message matching the selected message definition will be logged to the selected geodatabase.

TipTip:

If you are logging to an ArcSDE geodatabase, you will need to monitor and tune the database after it is populated to control file size and integrity. If you are logging to a personal geodatabase, you may encounter size limitations if the geodatabase becomes too large.
