Portal for ArcGIS 10.2.1 includes stability enhancements and improved functionality throughout the product. For a list of issues that are fixed in 10.2.1, see the 10.2.1 Issues Addressed List. For a summary of functionality changes in the software, see the following sections:

Portal for ArcGIS website updated

The overall design of the portal website has been updated to include usability improvements based on user feedback and usability testing.

Map viewer

There have been many improvements in the map viewer in Portal for ArcGIS 10.2.1, including the following:

  • You can get directions from a location by clicking the Get Directions link in a pop-up window. This opens the Directions panel in the map and uses the location from the pop-up window as the starting location. For more information, see Getting directions.
  • Routes you generate from the Directions panel can be saved as a layer in your map. See Adding route layers for more information.
  • If you choose to include location search in a map that you embed in a website, you now have the option to restrict the search to the current map extent. For more information, see Embedding web maps.
  • The default display for image service layers has been improved. Additionally, you can configure the display, show tables, create filters, display or hide the layer in the legend, and configure pop-up windows. For more information, see Displaying image layers.
  • A new collection of A to Z single symbols is available for you to use when changing symbols in a layer. The symbols are available in three colors.
  • You can drag and drop layers to reorder the map contents. For more information, see Organizing layers.
  • There is a new option on the layer context menu that allows you to set how often the layer will be refreshed in the map. This option applies to web service and basemap layers only. For more information, see Setting refresh interval.
  • The default basemaps have been updated in several areas, including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United States.

Web application templates

The following templates have been added, improved, or deprecated:

  • A new Storytelling Swipe map template is available. It is designed for mobile use and allows you to display two web maps or two layers of the same web map in a vertically split window or through a spy glass.
  • The Map Tour template is now included with Portal for ArcGIS. A Map Tour is a configurable story map template that combines an interactive map, a photo and text panel, and a thumbnail carousel. Using the template's Start from Scratch option, you can interactively add photos to your map by pointing to the URLs of photos you have added to your portal.
  • The Swipe Tool, Twitter Timeline, Search Maps, Side-by-Side Viewer, and Compare Maps templates for creating web mapping applications have been retired from the web app gallery. Existing applications based on these templates will continue to work. Although the code is no longer updated, you can still search for and download these templates.

Other enhancements

  • Czech and Finnish are now available as language options for viewing the website. Language determines the user interface as well as the way time, date, and numerical values appear. To see the website user interface in a language other than what the portal administrator has set for the organization, you can edit your profile. For more information, see Setting language.
  • You can now edit your account name, password, and security question from the profile page. For more information, see Managing your profile.
  • When you add an image file to your portal, the details page displays the URL of the image. You can use the URL to reference the image, for example, in web map pop-up windows. For more information, see Adding files from your computer.
