Using size

You can display features based on a single symbol of varying size that distinguishes the differences between the features. You pick the classification scheme and the number of classes. For example, you could use a money symbol of different sizes to show the relative profitability of the restaurants.

To use size to display features, follow the steps below.

Steps:
  1. Verify that you are logged in if you want to save the changes to a map you own or save a copy of a map owned by somebody else.
  2. Open the map you want to change in the map viewer.
  3. Click the Details button.
  4. Click the Contents button.
  5. Navigate to the sublayer that contains the symbols you want to edit.
  6. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name.
  7. Click Disable Editing.

    You must disable editing before you can change how the features are symbolized.

  8. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name again.
  9. Click Change Symbols. The Change Layer Symbols window appears within the Details panel.
  10. Select Size.
  11. Select the attribute field you want to show.
  12. Select a classification scheme.
  13. Select the number of classes from 1 to 5.
  14. Select a color set for the symbols.
  15. If you want to reverse the order of the colors in the color set, click the Symbols button and click Flip Colors.
  16. If you want to change all the symbols, click the Symbols button and click Change All Symbols. The Change Symbol window opens.
    1. Choose a symbol set, then click the symbol you want to use.
    2. If you want to add your own image, click the Add an Image link, then browse to the URL of your image file. For best results, the image should be no greater than 120 pixels wide by 120 pixels high. Other sizes will be adjusted to fit. Acceptable image formats are PNG, GIF, and JPEG.
    3. To change the start size, move the Start size slider to the left (smaller) or right (bigger). You can also enter numbers for the pixels.
    4. To change the end size, move the End size slider to the left (smaller) or right (bigger). You can also enter numbers for the pixels.
    5. To change the color, click inside the colored box to open the color palette and click a color.
    6. To change the transparency, move the Transparency slider to the left (less transparent) or right (more transparent). You can also enter numbers for percentage.
    7. To change the outline color, click inside the colored box to open the color palette and click a color.
    8. To change the width of the outline, move the Outline width slider to the left (less wide) or right (wider). You can also enter numbers for pixels.

      Not all symbols have options for changing color, transparency, and outline.

    9. Click Apply to apply the changes on the map.
    10. Click Done when you have finished changing the symbol.
  17. If you want to change symbols and labels for each value, click the value name from the Symbol Table. The Change Label and Symbol Table Item window opens. An attribute can have up to 200 unique values to change the symbols for each value.
    1. Enter a new label for the value in the Label field.
    2. Click the Change Symbol button to open the Change Symbol window.
    3. Choose a symbol set, then click the symbol you want to use.
    4. If you want to add your own image, click the Add an Image link, then browse to the URL of your image file. For best results, the image should be no greater than 120 pixels wide by 120 pixels high. Other sizes will be adjusted to fit. Acceptable image formats are PNG, GIF, and JPEG.
    5. To change the size, move the Symbol size slider to the left (smaller) or right (bigger). You can also enter numbers for the pixels.
    6. To change the color, click inside the colored box to open the color palette and click a color.
    7. To change the transparency, move the Transparency slider to the left (less transparent) or right (more transparent). You can also enter numbers for percentage.
    8. To change the outline color, click inside the colored box to open the color palette and click a color.
    9. To change the width of the outline, move the Outline width slider to the left (less wide) or right (wider). You can also enter numbers for pixels.

    10. Click Apply to apply the changes on the map.
    11. Click Done when you have finished changing the symbol.
    12. Click OK when you are done changing the single attribute.
    13. Repeat for additional attributes in your data.
  18. Click Apply when you are done changing the symbols.
  19. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name and click Save to save the symbol changes to the web map.
  20. If you changed symbols on a service layer you own, you can save the symbology as a property of the item. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name and click Save Item Properties.
