Sharing web applications

A good way to promote your web-mapping applications is to share them through the portal website. Showcasing your work not only encourages other users to build their own applications but clearly reveals the value of mobile GIS to your organization. Follow this three-step process to share your web application on the website:

Log in to the website

Log in to the website. Before you log in for the first time, you need to create an account. Check with your portal administrator if you need login information.

Add your web mapping application

When you add an application, you are referencing the URL. The website does not actually store the application files. To add an application reference, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. Open My Content and click the Add Item button.

    The Add Item window appears.

  2. Select An Application, then choose Web Mapping.
  3. Choose the purpose of the application. You have three choices:
    • Ready to Use—Fully functioning website
    • Configurable—Fully functioning application that can be deployed by configuring a file
    • Code Sample—Code for a specific piece of functionality
  4. Choose the API used to create the application—JavaScript, Flex, Silverlight, Web ADF, or Other.
  5. Enter the URL of the application, for example, http://<myServer>/myWebMapApp.
  6. Type a title.
  7. Type tags. Alternatively, you can click the Choose from your tags link to open the list of tags you've used.
  8. Click the Add Item button.

Once you've referenced your application, it appears on My Content, and you can edit the item details.

Edit item details

Fully documenting your item adds value to your work and makes it easier for others to discover, use, and build on your web application. Review the details that are added to your item and edit where necessary. Be sure your item has a specific and meaningful title, summary, description, and tags. Image thumbnails are not automatically generated for web applications, so you'll want to create your own and add it to the item details. For the best resolution, your thumbnail should be 200 by 133 pixels and in web format such as PNG. For more information, see Item details.

TipTip:

If you want to include code, create a ZIP file and use the Attach Code button to attach it. Your item details page now has a link to download the code attachment.

Share your application

Once you've added your web application and edited the item details, you should share it with others who have access to the portal website:

Steps:
  1. Open My Content.
  2. Check the check box next to the title of the web mapping application you want to share.

You can also share an item from within the item details page.

  3. Click the Share button.
  4. On the Share window that appears, check Everyone (public) and click OK.
