Customizing basemaps

The map viewer offers a basemap gallery that your portal members can use to change the basemap in their web maps. This basemap gallery uses a group to which basemaps have been shared.

As the portal administrator, you can configure which basemaps are available in the portal map viewer and which basemap is displayed by default when the map viewer is opened. You can use the default basemap gallery provided with Portal for ArcGIS, or define your own group as the basemap gallery. When you add or remove maps from the portal group set as the basemap gallery, the maps are also added or removed as basemap choices in the map viewer.

When you create your own group for the basemap gallery, you can use the following to create custom basemaps:

The following sections explain how to configure your portal to use custom basemaps.

Create a group to use for the basemap gallery

Create a group to store the basemaps for your portal.

Steps:
  1. Log in to the portal website.
  2. Open Groups and click Create a Group.
  3. Type a name, summary, description, and tags for the group.
  4. Leave the Status set to Public.
  5. If you want members of your portal to request membership to the group, leave Users can apply to join group checked. If you will be inviting members or no other members will be contributing basemaps to the group, uncheck it.
  6. Choose who can contribute basemaps to the group.
    • If other group members will be creating basemaps to share, choose All members.
    • If you will be the only person creating and sharing basemaps with this group, choose Only group administrator.
  7. From the Sorted by drop-down list, choose how the basemaps will be sorted by default, and then choose whether they will be listed in ascending or descending order by checking or unchecking Ascending.
  8. Click Save to create the group.

Create and share basemaps

Now that you have a group to use for your basemap gallery, you must create web maps to populate the gallery.

Once you have created the web maps that will be used as basemaps, share them with the group you will use as your basemap gallery. You must also share them with either your portal or everyone.

Steps:
  1. Open the map viewer.
  2. To use an existing basemap from the current basemap gallery:
    1. Click Basemap.
    2. Choose the basemap from the gallery.
    3. To show a more focused area, zoom to the extent you want to use as the initial extent of the basemap.
  3. To use a service:
    1. Click Add > Add Layer from Web.
    2. Choose either An ArcGIS Server Web Service, A WMS OGC Web Service, or A WMTS OGC Web Service from the drop-down list.
    3. Type or paste the URL for the map service in the URL field.
    4. Check Use as Basemap.
    5. Click Add Layer.

In the following example, the MyMap map service is added as a basemap.

    Add map service as basemap

  4. To use a Bing basemap:
    1. Click Add > Add Layer from Web.
    2. Choose A Bing Basemap from the drop-down list.
    3. Choose which Bing basemap you want to use.
    4. Click Add Layer.

Bing basemaps are only available if your portal is configured with a Bing Maps key.

  5. Click Save in the map viewer.

The Save Map dialog box opens.

  6. Type a Title, Tags, and Summary for the map, choose which folder to save it in, and click Save Map.
  7. You can share the map now while you are still in the map viewer, or wait until you have created all your basemaps and share them at once from My Content.
  8. To share the map from the map viewer:
    1. Click Share.
    2. Check the box next to the group you created for the basemap gallery.
    3. Check the box next to Everyone or your portal name.
    4. Click Close to apply your changes and close the Share window.
  9. To share multiple maps that you created at once:
    1. Open My Content.
    2. Check the box next to every web map you want to use for the basemap gallery and click Share.
    3. Check the box next to the group you created for the basemap gallery.
    4. Check the box next to Everyone or your portal name.
    5. Click OK to share all the selected maps.

Set the Basemap Gallery and Default Basemap

Finally, change the Map settings to specify the group you created as the Basemap Gallery for the portal, and choose one map from the Basemap Gallery to be the Default Basemap. The Default Basemap is the basemap that is present when you first open the map viewer.

Steps:
  1. Open the My Organization page in the portal website.
  2. Click Edit Settings.
  3. Click Map to open the page to configure the map viewer.
  4. Choose your basemap group from the Basemap Gallery drop-down list.

    TipTip:

You already set the default sort criteria, so you do not need to change it here.

  5. Choose one of the basemaps from the Default Basemap drop-down list. Choose the basemap that will be used most frequently by your organization.
  6. Click Save to apply your changes.

Now when anyone opens a new map in the map viewer, the default basemap you specified is in the map. When Basemap is clicked in the map viewer, the maps from the new basemap gallery you created are displayed.
