What's new in ArcGIS 10.2.1 for Server

ArcGIS 10.2.1 for Server includes stability enhancements and improved functionality throughout the product. For a list of issues that are fixed in 10.2.1, see the 10.2.1 Issues Addressed List. For a summary of functionality changes in the software, see the following sections:

ArcGIS Server Manager enhancements

ArcGIS Server Manager includes a number of improvements that can help you administer your ArcGIS Server site:

ArcGIS Web Adaptor enhancements

The ArcGIS Web Adaptor includes a number of improvements:

Updated Web Adaptor configuration page

The Web Adaptor configuration page has been upgraded to include a new user interface, similar to that of ArcGIS Server Manager. Also, the configuration page now displays the current status of its configuration, version number, and Web Adaptor platform type. To learn how to access this information, see Configuring the Web Adaptor after installation.

Multiple versions of the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS) can be installed on the same machine

Beginning at 10.2.1, you can have a 10.2.1 version of the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS) installed alongside one other previous version of the Web Adaptor on the same machine. For example, you can have a 10.1 SP1 version and a 10.2.1 version of the Web Adaptor installed on the same web server.

As with previous releases, the Web Adaptor version must always match the version of its registered ArcGIS Server site. For example, you cannot configure a 10.2.1 version of the Web Adaptor with ArcGIS 10.2 for Server.

To learn more, see Installing the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS).

Microsoft .NET 4.0 and 4.5 are now supported on the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS)

Microsoft .NET versions 4.0 and 4.5 are now supported by the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS). Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 is still supported; however, 4.0 and 4.5 allow you to take advantage of various performance, scalability, and security improvements. For more information, see ArcGIS Web Adaptor system requirements.

The ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS) can now be used with Microsoft .NET trust levels of High or Medium

The ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS) application now supports being used with IIS websites that require the .NET trust level to run at High or Medium access levels. This is common in organizations with higher security constraints where only partial trust can be granted to applications running on a website. To learn more, see Configuring the .NET trust level in IIS.

Services

Support for multiple dimensions in WMS services

ArcGIS Server WMS services now include enhanced support for multidimensional data. Prior to 10.2.1, TIME was the only supported dimension. Now all the dimensions of a dataset, such as elevation and depth, are advertised in the WMS service GetCapabilities response. You can request a map or specific layers in a map for a given dimension value. To consume dimensions other than TIME through WMS, you'll need to use a web browser or create your own custom OGC client application. Dimensions other than TIME are not currently supported through ArcGIS client applications.

To learn more, see Communicating with a WMS service in a web browser.

Server Object Extensions

ArcObjects .NET SOE samples certified for use with Microsoft Visual Studio 2012

All of the server object extension samples in the ArcObjects .NET SDK have been certified for use with Microsoft Visual Studio 2012. To learn more about how to develop SOEs using .NET, see Server object extensions in the ArcObjects Help for .NET.

.NET SOAP SOEs support custom .NET classes

SOAP SOEs developed with the Microsoft .NET Framework now support custom .NET classes as request and response parameters. Improvements in the Microsoft Visual Studio templates simplify the process of building SOAP SOEs with custom classes by eliminating the need for manually creating a type declaration file (XmlSupport*.dat) and for registering the .NET assembly on every machine in the ArcGIS Server site. If you have previously written SOAP SOEs with custom classes, they must be modified to implement an empty constructor for every custom class and use custom annotations in the SOE. For full instructions on how to do this, see Developing SOAP server object extensions in the ArcObjects Help for .NET.

Other changes

As indicated in the ArcGIS deprecation notice on the Esri support site, you cannot publish feature services to an ArcGIS Spatial Data Server nor administer a spatial data server from ArcGIS 10.2.1 for Desktop.
