Schematics extension

Working for an organization that manages schematics diagrams, you're faced with the challenge of sharing your collection of schematic information with people inside your organization as well as those outside.

The schematic datasets you create using the ArcGIS for Desktop Schematics extension can be published to ArcGIS for Server and exposed in desktop, mobile, and web applications with the ArcGIS for Server Schematics extension.

The ArcGIS for Desktop Help describes the broad range of schematic modeling and visualization capabilities contained in the ArcGIS for Desktop Schematics extension. See the following topics for more information:

Working with Schematics on the web

ArcGIS for Server provides a Schematics server object extension (SOE) that allows you to publish the schematic content you create using the ArcGIS for Desktop Schematics extension to ArcGIS for Server, and expose that content on the web in client applications using the ArcGIS web APIs.

The Schematics capability is available on servers installed with ArcGIS for Server in Standard or Advanced editions. When it is enabled, it allows you to display, create, update, and lay out schematic diagrams in a server environment.

Once you have created a map with schematic layers, the Schematics SOE allows you to make that map accessible on the ArcGIS server. When the map is published with the Schematics capability, internal or external client applications can send specific operations to the server and receive responses such as the following:

Sent operations

Responses

Querying and displaying a particular schematic diagram

The request is sent to the server and the desired schematic diagram displays.

Applying an algorithm on a schematic diagram

The diagram content and the algorithm parameters are sent to the server; the diagram content is modified on the server and returned to the client that redisplays it.

Saving edits in the schematic diagram (see Caution note below)

The diagram content is sent to the server; the diagram content is saved on the server.

Generating a schematic diagram starting from a context on the client (see Caution note below)

The context is sent to the server; the content of the schematic diagram is generated on the server and returned to the client that displays it.

Updating a schematic diagram (see Caution note below)

The context for the update is sent to the server; the diagram content is updated on the server and returned to the client that redisplays it.

CautionCaution:

Saving edits in your diagrams, generating new diagrams, or updating diagrams is supported on Schematics services that reference data coming from a registered enterprise geodatabase only.
