Pausing the data frame refresh (Maritime Charting)

The Suspend Refresh tool allows you to disable data frame refreshing when you are using the data view in ArcMap. This can be helpful when editing data, especially annotation, and there is a large number of layers. It differs from the Pause Drawing tool in that with the Suspend Refresh tool, the data frame still shows your data and you can interact with features. However, if the Suspend Refresh tool is engaged and you pan, zoom in or out, turn a layer on or off, or edit a feature’s position or shape, the display will not change. You will need to disengage the tool to see your results.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
  3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Nautical Editing Cartography.
  4. Load the layers you need to perform your edits.
  5. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.
    NoteNote:

The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    TipTip:

If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  6. Click the Suspend Refresh button Suspend Refresh on the Nautical Editing Cartography toolbar.

The data frame will not be able to refresh the display. You can still select, modify, or edit features, and the display will remain static.

NoteNote:

The black pause icon changes to a red pause icon when the tool is engaged Suspend Refresh engaged. You can click Suspend Refresh again to reenable the data frame refresh and see your results.
