Changing the holding pattern line to a curve (Aviation)

The Curved Holding Pattern tool allows you to change the holding pattern line depiction in an instrument approach profile view from the existing depiction to a curved line. The curved line is attached to the associated vertical line at two nodes. Changing the holding pattern portrayal indicates when or where in the holding pattern it is safe to change altitudes or descend.

Curved holding pattern

The curved line created is as wide as the length of the original holding pattern line. You can move the end points of the curve along the vertical line to make the arc smaller or larger.

Vertical line
Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. On the main menu, click View > Layout View.
  3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Aviation Terminal Procedure.
  4. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Aviation Profile Edit.
  5. Click the Edit Instrument Approach Profile button Edit Instrument Approach Profile on the Aviation Terminal Procedure toolbar.
  6. Select a holding pattern inside the instrument approach profile view element.
  7. Click the Curved Holding Pattern button Curved Holding Pattern on the Aviation Profile Edit toolbar.

The selected holding pattern updates with an arc depicting a curved holding pattern.

TipTip:

If there is not enough room in the instrument approach profile view for the curved line on the default side of the vertical line due to other instrument approach profile view elements, you can flip the entire holding pattern depiction to the opposite side of the vertical by clicking the blue anchor point in the center of the element (the purple anchor points are not selectable) or an endpoint and dragging the anchor or endpoint horizontally to the opposite side. For example, drag the holding pattern to the opposite side of the vertical line.
