Consuming the route service using ArcMap

After connecting ArcGIS for Desktop to the Ready-To-Use Services, you can begin consuming the route.arcgis.com service to solve routes using the ArcMap Find Route dialog box.

The Find Routes geoprocessing service on logistics.arcgis.com is also available for ArcGIS for Desktop users who prefer a geoprocessing tool interface.

Using the World Route Service from ArcMap

The route.arcgis.com server includes one service that you can access through ArcMap: the route service.

The Route server also includes services for solving service area and closest facility problems, but they cannot be consumed from ArcMap. Other clients, such as web applications, can call these two services. If you need to solve those kinds of problems in ArcMap, you can use their equivalent services from the Logistics server instead.

Like the logistics and traffic services, the route service is capable of finding routes almost anywhere because it references road data that covers much of the world. Since much of the ArcGIS Online road data also includes traffic data, you can find the best routes and account for dynamic traffic conditions. For instance, you can find the best route from home to work with a departure time of 7:00 a.m. and compare that route with one you generate for 8:00 a.m.

The steps that follow provide general instructions on how to use the ArcMap Find Route dialog box to solve a route using the ArcGIS Online route task. For a detailed tutorial on how to use Find Route, see Finding a route with an ArcGIS Online routing service.

Steps:
  1. Once you have connected to the Ready-To-Use Services, add a basemap or other reference data to ArcMap and zoom in to your study area.
  2. Open the Find Route dialog box by clicking the Find Route button Find Route on the Tools toolbar.

  3. Click the Options tab.
  4. Set Routing Service to ArcGIS Online World Routing Service.
  5. To find the quickest route for a specific time and account for traffic, set Impedance to TravelTime, check Use trip start, and then type a date and time.
  6. Click the Stops tab.
  7. Click the Add Stop button to add stops by geocoding, or click the Add stop by click tool Add Stop and click on the map.
  8. Set any other options and click Find Route.
