Preventing users from connecting to a geodatabase

This topic applies to ArcGIS for Desktop Standard and ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced only.

As a geodatabase administrator, you can change a setting in the geodatabase to prevent new connections from being made to it. Existing connections remain.

You might block new connections from being made to an enterprise, workgroup, or desktop geodatabase before certain maintenance operations such as compressing, upgrading, or making a full backup of the geodatabase.

Steps:
  1. In ArcGIS for Desktop, create a database connection to your geodatabase.

You must connect as the geodatabase administrator.

  2. Right-click the database connection in the Catalog tree and click Properties.
  3. Click the Connections tab.
  4. Uncheck Geodatabase is accepting connections.

No new connections can be made to the geodatabase. Existing user connections remain active.

    NoteNote:

The geodatabase administrator can always make a connection to the geodatabase regardless of how this property is set.

If you also need to remove any existing connections, see the topic appropriate to your database management system under Related Topics for more information.
