Making a user connection to a spatial data server in ArcGIS for Desktop

You can create a user connection from the Catalog tree in ArcGIS for Desktop to view and query feature services on a spatial data server.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap and open the Catalog window.
  2. In the Catalog tree, expand the GIS Servers node.
  3. Double-click Add ArcGIS Server.
  4. Choose Use GIS services, and click Next.
  5. In the Server URL text box, type the services user URL of the feature service to which you want to connect.

The user service URL is in the format http://<server name:web app port>/<spatial data server name>/rest/services.

For example, if a spatial data server instance, arcgissds, is running on server steed and communicating via the web application through port 8080, the user service URL is http://steed:8080/arcgissds/rest/services.

  6. Click Finish.

Your new connection appears under the GIS Servers node in the Catalog tree.

You are now connected with a GIS service user connection, which you can use to access services running on the spatial data server.

If you need to modify your connection, you can do so by right-clicking it in the Catalog tree and clicking Properties.
