Validating nautical topology (Maritime Charting)

Nautical topology uses geodatabase topology to ensure the data integrity of the nautical product. It has a large set of pre-configured individual topology rules, which satisfy some of the S-58 checks. For example, the topology checks ensure that land and depth areas don’t overlap one another. Nautical topology dataset exists in the ENC, AML, and IENC production databases; it is not implemented in the enterprise NIS database or Chart production database. The topology rules are based on S-57 objects. AML and IENC share objects with ENC and the same topology checks are configured for them for the shared objects.

Nautical topology must be validated to find errors for the configured rules. You may validate the nautical topology in your product using the tools on Topology toolbar as well as Validate Topology geoprocessing tool. Update Primitives also validates topology every time it is run.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Click the Add Data button Add Data on the Standard toolbar.
  3. Navigate to the production database and add it to map.
  4. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
  5. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.
    NoteNote:

    The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    TipTip:

    If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  6. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Topology.
  7. You can validate a portion of a topology using the tools on the Topology toolbar.
    • Click Validate Topology In Specified Area Validate Topology In Specified Area and drag a box around the area you want to validate. The features that fall within the bounding box will be validated.
    • Click Validate Topology In Current Extent Validate Topology In Current Extent. Areas that are not currently visible on the map are not validated.
  8. Click Error Inspector Error Inspector on the Topology toolbar.
  9. You can use the Error Inspector window to find errors and exceptions.

    To find errors for all rules

    Click the Show drop-down arrow, and click Errors from all rules.

    To find errors for a particular topology rule

    Click the Show drop-down arrow, and click the rule.

    To find errors in the visible extent

    Check Visible extent only.

    To find exceptions

    Check Exceptions, and uncheck Errors.

  10. Click Search Now.
  11. Click the error in the Error Inspector list or use the Fix Topology Error tool to click it on the map.

    The error is drawn in black on the map.

  12. Right-click the error in the list or on the map and click one of the available fixes. The fixes listed depend on the type of error.

    For example, to fix a Must Not Overlap error by merging an overlapping polygon into another polygon, right-click the error, click Merge, then choose the feature into which to merge the error feature.

  13. Validate the topology again to ensure the edit was correct.
